Songwriting and storytelling come naturally to Texas native Derrick Davis, who grew up influenced by Austin’s rich musical scene. From a young age, the gifted young Texan aligned himself with talented friends who shared his musical vision. Friends since grade school, bandmates Davis and Slagle met drummer Ingber sometime after high school. These three enjoy a long history of playing music together and share with newer bandmates a long-held affinity for music. The group’s appreciation and talent comes through collectively in the band’s sound, which features original songs written from Davis’ life experiences. “Dialing into real life emotions allows me to compose a wide variety of sounds and songs,” says Davis, who writes all song lyrics. “Inspiration is always there if you just pay attention to it.” With help from this newly formed band, Davis proceeded to transform his raw, acoustic ideas into a smooth blend of harmony and lyric. The result is a richly connected, signature sound that came through loud and clear in The Derrick Davis Band’s debut LP, And Everything In Between. The melodic, emotionally driven production spurred an acoustic summer tour that same year. Since that first LP, Davis has spent much time growing, performing, and writing new material. Having spent part of that time in Brooklyn, New York, Davis and his band are now back home in Austin, where they have just completed work on a strong sophomore EP, The Burnout. This latest effort takes the idea of cross-market material and sets out to prove – quite successfully the band’s belief that “good music is just good music.” Highlights include refreshing, genre-blended songs like “Burn Out,” “Devil Inside,” and more.
