Jessie Evans Biography

Jessie Evans is a Californian singer, saxophonist, record producer and visual artist currently living in Brazil. Fan of the English ska bands The Selecter and The Specials, Jessie learned to play saxophone and moved to San Francisco as a teenager, forming the all girl punk rock quartet Subtonix. Shortly after, she began singing and playing bass and started the The Vanishing. In 2004 she moved to Berlin where she formed the synthetic duet Autonervous with Bettina Koester of the German all girl dark wave band Malaria! During that time she also collaborated with Glass Candy, Hanin Elias (Atari Teenage Riot), and Lydia Lunch. On her first two solo albums she played most the instruments and invited an array of friends to join. In 2009, her first solo album "Is it Fire?" was be recorded in Mexico and co-produced by Pepe Mogt of Nortec Collective. This album feat. Budgie (Siouxsie and the Banshees), Martin Wenk (Calexico) and longtime drummer Toby Dammit (Iggy Pop). Her second album "Glittermine" feat. Steve Mackay (Iggy and The Stooges), Warrior Queen (Jamaica/ Soul Jazz), Jimi Tenor (Finland) and King Khan(Berlin). Armed with her saxophone like a machine gun, this former punk struts and shimmies to hypnotic beats to stamp her glittery universe into the stars. Between burlesque tragi-comic performance, and sultry dancefloor, a concert of Jessie Evans fuses no-wave, disco, Afrobeat, Pop, Reggae and Latin chaos, to create her own unique style. "IN LOVE WITH JESSIE & PITSHU" In 2013, Jessie Evans, a Californian singer and saxophonist, known internationally for her original style of Afrobeat and Latin inspired New Wave moved to Sao Paulo where she met an Angolan Freestyle singer named Pitshu and two Dub producers: Victor Rice (New York City) and Kas Dub (Sao Paulo). The result was the most passionate love affairs of her life, resulting not only in a Brazilian daughter but an album “In love with Jessie & Pitshu” “In love with” brings together two singers and two producers from four corners of the earth (San Francisco, Luanda, New York City and Sao Paulo) to create an original Dub album with influences from Ska, Freestyle, Kuduro, Reggae, Jazz, New Wave and Pop. The simplicity of the songs and warmth of the duet of Jessie and Pitshu singing together with Jessie’s catchy saxophone riffs illuminate the life and passions of this couple as they realize their dreams overseas and the celebration of the arrival of their daughter. Both honest and uplifting, this album is a universal love story in the form of a dub dance album, with 8 original tracks and 5 dub versions. About the others on this recording.. . PITSHU+++ Matondo “Pitshu” Manzambi moved to São Paulo, from Luanda, Angola in 2005 at the age of 20. With him he brought a unique voice for a kind of music unknown to him at the time. His musical occupation back home was singing Kuduro, a genre of popular dance born in Angola at the end of the '80s that continues to evolve today. Still getting accustomed to the third-largest city in the world, he befriended Jimmy The Dancer, a well-known personality in the Centre. Jimmy introduced him to the Dubversão Sound System, led by DJ Yellow P. In 2006, Pitshu brought his unique voice to the party - not versed in Jamaican music, his sense of melody, phrasing and cadence was a fresh, new juxtaposition upon the heavier tempo of Jamaican reggae and the psychedelic sounds of dub version. The combination worked famously and Pitshu became the official MC for the party. This association also resulted in his first CD, "Basoda", produced and released by Dubversão in 2008. Soon after, Pitshu met Victor Rice who was another regular at the party since 2002, discovering it soon after relocating to São Paulo from NYC, which resulted in the collaboration of the two on Pitshu's second full-length record, “Second Chapter.” Pitshu jumps freely between languages - Lingala, Portuguese, French, and on occasion Kikongo, English and Swahili and assures the listener that all lyrics are of a basic, positive nature: Giving thanks to the Creator, treating children well, respecting one another. VICTOR RICE++ Victor Rice emerged as a central figure in New York’s third wave ska scene in the late 80’s as both as a performer (bassist for The Scofflaws, Stubborn All- Stars, New York Ska Jazz Ensemble and as a producer ( The Pietasters, The Slackers, The Adjusters, Skavoovie and the Epitones) and gained notoriety for having worked with many of the bands on the influential Moon Ska record label. In 1996, Rice began experimenting with dub music and through the late1990’s worked as a composer and sound designer for television. In 2002, Rice moved to Brazil where he continued to produce reggae and ska music by a variety of international acts, including Firebug (Brazil), The Moon Invaders (Belgium), The Stingers ATX (USA), The Japonicans (Japan) and Chris Murray (Canada), Cedric Brooks (Brazil) and Buford O’Sullivan (USA). In addition, from 2000-2009 Rice was a bassist and engineer with Easy Star Records and worked on many of their recordings, including Dub Side of the Moon. He also released his second solo album “In America” in 2003. His solo act Strikkly Vikkly Dubsystem, mixes dub live on stage using an analog reel-to-reel tape machine and traditional signal processing effects.. Although influenced by important foundational artists such as King Tubby and Augustus Pablo, Rice has a dub style that is distinct from that of the genre’s early pioneers. Since moving to Brazil he continues to work with variety of local groups such as Os Paralamas, Marcelo camelo, Mallu Magalhães, Ponto de equilíbrio, Buguinha Dub, Céu, Curumin, Anelis Assumpção, João Donato, and many others. He has mixed the music for HBO special "Clubversão", won two latin grammys for mixing Elza Soares and Tulipa Ruiz and has a new record, "Smoke" coming out on Easy Star Records this Fall. KAS DUB++ Kas Dub is a Dj and Producer of Zona Leste, São Paulo. Since 2011 he has been releasing independent Reggae productions, including releases with Johnny Osbourne, Brother Culture, Robert Lee, Jah Knomoh, Dub Attack, Jr LittleCar, Maria Elvira, Pitshu, Amanajé, Killaman, LennyFya, David Humbbard, Sensimila Dub, Viegas, Felipe Ramos, Bruno and Gabriel da Banda Dialeto Dub, Union Band Rasta and other artists of the Brazilian Reggae scene. In 2012 he set up his own sound system with handcrafted boxes, and plays many parties in Sao Paulo with the MC’s collective.
