The Caz-Bats Biography
A Brief History
Between 1966 and 1967, an ambitious Garage Rock band, The Cazbats played 100’s of shows up and down the Upper East Coast. Playing anywhere and to anyone who would listen. Bowling alleys, school dances, dives, ski resorts and town squares. You name it. Anywhere there was a space for four teenagers set up and plug in they would be there.
Playing from a repertoire of songs that would go on to become Garage Rock and early Psychedelic classics. Fronted by singer/ guitarist Chris Yeager, the band would be most known for their high energy live shows. Although they recorded a handful of 45s during this time none would ever become hits or even get played nationally.
It was in the summer of 67 that the band started to splinter. First to leave was Mark Pauley the drummer (it’s always the drummer). Just shy of his 16th birthday he enlisted in the army using his older brother’s ID. Next came Pete Allen the Bass Player. He decided to give up the music he loved for the girl he loved. The band kept marching on as a three piece with fill in drummers and Willie Knox moving over to bass for another 6 months. Then it happened. On December 31st 1967 in Parsippany,NJ it was there that The Cazbats would play their last show for almost 50 years. Willie that night would experiment for the first time taking a tab of LSD after listening to the first Pink Floyd album- Piper At The Gates of Dawn. As you may have guessed the experiment didn’t go well. During a set closing and very rousing version of Gloria, Willie proceeded to strip naked and then urinate on the audience while screaming that they were on fire. After that infamous day, Chris and Willie would never speak to each other again. The end of The Cazbats.
Fast forward to 2015. Chris decides it’s time to get the band back together. After an exhausting search for original three players, he soon decided if it was going to happen he would have to find some new blood. Mark the drummer, a retired Police Officer couldn’t justify going back and playing shows for less money than what he made in 1967. Pete was committed to raising his 17 grandchildren while his sons and daughters worked long hours. Chris for a moment considered approaching Willie, a troubled man who hadn’t been employed since 1983, but decided he couldn’t be in a band with someone he refused to speak to. Enter Matt Robinson, Dan McCarthy and Bob Roos, three veteran players of the Boston band scene. In May of 2018, after working together for over two and half years, the band entered the studio again to re-record the songs The Cazbats first recorded in 1966 and 1967.
