About this concert
Sad House Daddy presents Starry Starry Nights, a monthly live music event held every last Wednesday of each month upstairs at The Star by Hackney Downs in east London. Entry is £6.00 and seats are restricted to just 35 places. Here's the line-up for show #149: 8:15pm - Lou Palmer Lou Palmer is a Windsor born, East London based songwriter and singer and the former front woman of Britpop band Honeytunnel and noughties indie artists Loopjoy. She's currently recording a solo Americana project with Sean Read (The Rockingbirds, Dexys, Edwyn Collins), James Walbourne (The Rails, Pretenders) and Carwyn Ellis (Colorama, Edwyn Collins, Sarah Cracknell), Paul Winterhart (Black Casino and The Ghost, Kula Shaker) and legendary pedal steel player BJ Cole (First Aid Kit, Jimmy Webb, R.E.M.). 8:45pm - Eva Abraham Eva Abraham, a singer-songwriter from North London who has produced a huge catalogue of music over the years, not just as an artist for herself - including three solo albums - but also for film, television, production libraries and other artists and bands. Her music captures flavours of folk, Americana, eastern European gypsy, Latin American cumbia, blues, jazz and country, all brought together by a voice of depth and purity. 9:20pm - Phoebe White Phoebe White has worked as a singer since her early teens, performing and recording in a versatile range of styles from pop to house to rock and blues. More recently she has built up an impressive catalogue of backing vocal appearances, as well as being a soloist with the Blues Kitchen Gospel Choir and comprising one third of acoustic punk harmony trio The Rebelles. Phoebe released an EP titled "The Grey Ribbon Road" in 2014, a mix of pastoral English folk pitched against a traditional Americana backing. 9:55pm - Alice Night Alice Night is an experimental folk artist born in Brisbane, Australia, a singer-songwriter who creates an alchemical mix of music, storytelling and performance. Her powerful voice, courageously honest stage-presence and bold and poetic lyrics have won her attention since her debut in 2013. Night's debut album "Culture How Could You?" was the result of a creative collaboration with ARIA-nominated and APRA-award-winning composer Robert Davidson (Topology). It received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with the blog Music Is My Muse enthusing that fans of Bjork, Lorde and Ladyhawke will adore this enchanting debut. Alice has just released an album of folk-oriented songs titled "Hell Or Heal" in which she showcases her lyrical storytelling and haunting voice. This will be followed later in the year by "ITANI", an album of experimental electronica written and recorded with Chris Townend and Simon Mavin. Alice Night's compositions explore themes of place, the role of culture, the raw nature of love, addiction and alchemy, at once dark and uplifting and combining old world sensibilities with contemporary technologies.

Eva Abraham Biography

Eva is a truly original singer/songwriter with majestic vocal talent.

This inspirational artist has forged a unique repertoire through hard work, lots of gigging and a passion for writing that has seen her record or share the stage with the likes of David Gray, Courtney Pine, Neil Barnes (Leftfield), Ani Difranco, DJ Skitz and John Martyn who she recently supported on his UK tour.

Eva was born in north London to Hungarian and Polish parents and through her childhood was immersed in the sounds of classical and Hungarian gypsy folk music. Also on the family stereo was a mix of American country music, Simon & Garfunkel, Nancy & Lee, The Beach Boys and Barbara Streisand. Through a childhood friend she was also exposed to a heavy dose of reggae and lovers rock. Later Eva's love of Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder and Gil Scott-Heron all helped forge the sound she has created for her own music.

Other musical influences include Kristen Hersch, Nina Simone, Gillian Welch, Etta James, Neil Young, Zero 7, Jeff Buckley, Paul Weller and the Big Chill's many compilation albums. There was never any doubt that Eva would choose a life of song writing and performing in some shape or form. So as soon as she could she graced the stage. After purchasing her first acoustic guitar, Eva immediately began to pen her first songs and was later introduced to open mic nights at the world famous Troubadour on the Old Brompton Road where she regularly performed, handcrafting the perfect song writing ingredients, about to be unveiled on her exceptional debut solo album.

Eva quickly found her audience and moved onto gigs at the 12 Bar Club, Mean Fiddler Acoustic Room and later her band 'Evalution' picked up gigs all over London. She went on to sell-out performances at The Jazz Café, Ronnie Scotts and Dingwalls with her first critically acclaimed album 'Soul Glide' which she released on her own record label. Evalution soon had festival bookings including Glastonbury, Phoenix and the Cambridge Folk Festival.

Tragically, Eva lost a close friend, guitarist and musical mentor to leukemia and sought solace in writing songs. In October 2001 she signed a record deal with the hip independent label City Rockers where she had the opportunity to record a collection of songs which would become her forthcoming spell binding album 'Shadow Gazing'. Unfortunately the label lost it's funding from backers Ministry of Sound and after a year of delivering the album, whilst still waiting for release, she exercised her right to reclaim the recording. Happily Eva has walked free with the music she is so proud of.

In recording 'Shadow Gazing', Eva bought in a collection of musicians and producers to complement the acoustic beauty of her sound. The album is lush in harmonies, strings by Andy Nice and Andy Waterworth from 'Instrumental' and the drums of Crispin Taylor from Zero 7. Produced by Niven Garland (Portishead), the album has been likened to artists such as Beth Gibbons, Joni Mitchell, PJ Harvey, Beth Orton and Eva Cassidy. "I think I'm in good company then' says Eva who describes herself as 'a passionate, warm, creative clown who writes from the heart'. She says of her debut 'If we look a bit deeper we might see that something positive can come out of strange, perhaps sad situations, and we can glow'. And with material in place for at least another two albums, the future glows for Eva Abraham.
