About this concert
Myth & Movement Richard Dawson curates an evening of musical, mythical mirth-making, featuring some incredible visiting and homespun performers who each stretch the possibilities of song making into new forms to create their own new traditions. A dozen breathtaking performers gathered together for a very special ritual in the heart of the Ouseburn. with Pentecostal Party Fabulous, fun, enchanting electronic art songs from Newcastle-based Paisley popstar Dawn Bothwell (one quarter of Hen Ogledd), guaranteed to quicken the heart, slacken the jaw and get those hooves trotting! Richard Dawson & Nev Clay These two fellows - the niftiest of melodymen and very old friends - will make a rare appearance sharing the stage whereupon they'll engage in a 'friendly derby match', if you will..... a song-battle with soft pugil sticks of pure sounds.... A rap battle with no rapping, and not a battle. This has only happened once before, and it was quite good! Afework nigussie Afework Nigussie is a musician and singer from Gondar in northern Ethiopia. He has a background in Azmari, the music of the wandering minstrels. The Azmari are the voices of freedom of expression in Ethiopia, improvising constantly, commenting on politics, religion and everyday life. Their style is very specific, both provocative and humorous. Nigusse has also trained at the National Theatre in Addis Ababa and, more recently, collaborated with The Ex. Nigussie's music celebrates the rich tradition of both secular and religious music in Ethiopia, which has resulted in a wide range of zefen (folk song). Zefen include songs to accompany iskista (dancing), fukara to celebrate the heroic deeds of warriors and musho and lekso to express sorrow at funerals. Singing forms the accompaniment of farming and comes to the fore at every pivotal moment of life. He also plays a range of traditional stringed, woodwind and percussive instruments. Many people are familiar with the Ethiopian music of the golden seventies; Nigussie's music both harks back to this era and innovates the ancient Azmari tradition. Mary Hampton Mary has been a professional whistle-maker and travelling history-book salesman. She is now a writer/singer living in Brighton. Fetching out old songs from the silent archives of the traditional canon, and winching up new songs from her imagination, she then sets them both to work alongside each other. Her style has its roots in mauve, turn-of-the-century European chamber music, with frequent nods to the hairiness of older forms, and ripened under the influence of even more primitive sounds from the real world. Yama Warashi Yama Warashi is formed by Bristol-based Japanese artist Yoshino Shigihara with eclectic band members. Her music has a dreamy evocative sound with a shadow of moon cake, inspired by Japanese folk dance music, Bon Odori(盆踊り), free jazz and African music with a slice of electric psychedelia. Yoshino plays keyboard, percussions and sings songs in her mother tongue about mycelium, nuclear power staion and broken O. Yama Warashi (山童) means a small child-like spirit which lives in the mountains.

Myth Biography

1) Alias of Dutch DJ and Trance Producer Menno de Jong, who released "Millionfold" under this name in 2004, with another track, "Sjamaan" released in May 2007.

2) The metal band "Myth" was first founded on 24th of January 2008. in Novi Sad under the name "Demona's Cry" by Tatjana Ognjenovic, Stefan Papic and Zeljko Popovic. The bend went through turbulent times and in spring that same year Boris Dzinic and some time later Branko Maricic were included in the group. Following the departure of their lead singer Tatjana, who was succeeded by Mina Popov, who also left after only two months, when "Myth" decided they would no longer use female vocals. After several months of playing whilst undergoing through constant line-up changes, they finally settled down as existing members were gathered, and their usual song repertoire was formed by late august 2008, when finally keyboard player Matkovic Aleksandar came in, again altering the musical style. Since then, things started picking up pace for the bend: the new line-up would prove to be a direct hit, as the members quickly related musically between each other, changed their name to "Myth", and started rehearsing on a regular basis. They are currently working their way towards a fully recorded debut album, which would incorporate songs with various style, lyrically and musically, altogether blended to form their now distinct style of playing: uniqueness and mutual tolerance towards the versatility and different musical backgrounds of each composing member, that proved to be the core of their revolving style and vital to the success of the bend as a whole.
