David Ireland: Bass-Baritone Biography

Bass-Baritone David Ireland is an ENO Harewood Artist. He is an alumnus of the National Opera Studio and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He continues to study with Robert Dean.
Operatic performances have included Colline La Bohème with Grand Opéra Avignon and ENO, Il Gran Sacerdote Nabucco with Opéra Orchestre National de Montpellier, Kuligin Katia Kabanova at Opéra National de Lorraine, Doctor Bartolo The Barber of Seville while covering at ENO, Achilla Giulio Cesare with Bury Court Opera, King René Iolanta, Collatinus The Rape of Lucretia, and Ottavio Le donne curiose at the GSMD and L'Arbre L'Enfant et les sortilèges at the Barbican Centre. He has also covered the roles of Don Magnifico La Cenerentola for WNO, Zaretsky Eugene Onegin and Neptune Idomeneo as an Alvarez Young Artist for Garsington Opera and, for the Royal Opera at Camden Roundhouse, Charon in Monteverdi's Orfeo.

With NOS, David performed excerpts of Figaro Le nozze di Figaro, Vater Hänsel und Gretel and Rigoletto at WNO, and Leporello Don Giovanni, Figaro, Don Alfonso Così fan tutte at Opera North. Whilst GSMD, he also performed scenes from Nick Shadow The Rake's Progress, Méphistophélès Faust, Colline La bohème, Don Pasquale, Giorgio I puritani and Il Re Ariodante which he also performed at the Grand Theatre, Shanghai.

During his time at the GSMD, David created the roles of Father Bruno in Julian Philips' The Tale of Januarie and Chorus 2 in Osborn's Narkissus and the Reflektions, including performances in the Royal Opera House's Clore Studio, Budapest's Solti Hall. With NOS, he performed scenes from Joanna Marsh's My Beautiful Camel directed by David Pountney at Wilton's Music Hall, London.

David's performances on the concert platform have included Verdi Requiem, Handel Messiah, Tippett A Child of our Time in Glasgow Cathedral, Bach Mass in B Minor in Canterbury Cathedral, Mozart Requiem in Chichester Cathedral, Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle in Rochester Cathedral and Haydn Creation at Colston Hall, Bristol.

During his studies, has benefitted from masterclasses with Brindley Sherratt, Lisa Gasteen, Susan Bullock and Neal Davies.

As a recitalist, David has performed at Wigmore Hall with the ENO Harewood Artists, and recorded hitherto undiscovered music written for and by Samuel Pepys for a Radio 4 documentary. He also received the GSMD's Concert Recital Diploma for MMus Final Recital and had a song cycle, Among the Streams, written for him in 2011 by Alex Patterson.
