SkewWhiff Biography

Skewwhiff have played festivals and gigs extensively, honing the songs and the set in preparation for their debut long player, Nice Little Upper, which was released in 2014.

Genre is always a poser when faced with such variety of sound, so the fact that Skewwhiff have not been out of place supporting bass legend Mike Watt's brand of jazz/punk and Brit-pop pioneers Dodgy, demonstrates the difficulty in pinning a pithy label to this bunch of misfits.

The majority of the album was recorded at Tower Studios with Dave Draper (Kerbdog, [spunge], Merrymouth) at the helm, with three tracks having been previously recorded with Nigel Clark, and released via The Whole Hog Recordings in April. The Whole Hog are also responsible for Slap Magazine (Supporting Local Artists and Performers), which further shows that Skewwhiff are fully ensconced in a thriving local music scene.

"I absolutely LOVE your new album and am playing it in the car ALL THE TIME. It is THE TESTICLES." Attila The Stockbroker.

"Definitively undefinable post-punk outsiders, like nothing else." Something Else @Bearded Theory festival.

"Brilliant angular indie-punk from Worcester." Glastonwick.

"They evoke some of the classic early 80s political punk bands like the Au Pairs, Gang of Four with a hint of Pixies " Surprise Attacks.

"Brit-pop, space-rock" Doozer McDooze.

"Excellent debut album there guys, great mixes too" Fudge, Cracked Actors.

Here's what Space Ace had to say about them:

SKEWWHIFF: "Not straight" the dictionary says - ok with me.

And here they come now, not merely running or walking down the street but loping languidly, gliding spectrally in their other-worldly way.

These cats don't move the same way you and I do

Existing in their own orbit, rarified oxygen substitute intake: The Band Who Fell To Earth.

This unholly unicellular organism, a gang in the true sense, fortress gainst unintelligence, an anti-entropy unit.

Yeah sure they write riffs, tunes, words: pluck'n'strum strings, strike skins and massacre microphones. Singing humanoid songs they remain tho amicable and benevolent aliens, doomed yet happy to remain forever outsiders in the purest sense.

They'll hate reading this pretentious twaddle, disagreeing with mere verbiage, kicking against the pricks as always. They have no truck with useless useless, irrelevant, turgid biography so neither shall I.

Their earthly disguise is (un)canny taking on an almost plebeian aspect/countenance; these are 'people' who will steal your lunch money, cadge fags and ponce beers off you all night long. Yes they doubtlessly indulge in anthropomorphic sex squelchings but don't let that fool you, this is immaculate music.

Onstage they've beamed down as nearest organic counterparts, Debbie Harry surrounded by an interstellar dream team of Topper Headon, Mike Watt and John McGeoch.

I can't tell you about the nameless noise they create so answers on a interplanetary postcard please

This is unchartered territory, untamed topography; yer sat-nav is no use round here.

I'm envious though because Skewwhiff are yours to discover and yours only.

Love On Ya!
