Duo – Rachel Musson + Steve Beresford | Trio – Nick Stephens + John Butcher + Steve Beresford
Rachel Musson is a saxophonist, improviser and composer living in London, UK. She is involved with a variety of improvisation projects, including trios with Pat Thomas and Mark Sanders (Shifa Live at Cafe Oto due out on 577 Records in July 2019), and with Hannah Marshall and Julie Kjaer, a nonet “I Went This Way” featuring composition and spoken word, and several other collaborations with improvisers. Recordings include “Bibimbap” (Two Rivers Records) with Mark Sanders and John Edwards, and “Tapering Arms Point into the Wind” with bassist Olie Brice. She has played with a diverse array of musicians on the UK and international music scene, including Steve Beresford, Corey Mwamba, Sarah Gail Brand, Louis Moholo, Alex Ward, Luc Ex, Hamid Drake, Ab Baars.
Steve Beresford has been a central figure in the British and international spontaneous music scenes for over forty years, freely improvising on the piano, electronics and other things with people like Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Han Bennink, John Zorn and Alterations (with David Toop, Terry Day and Peter Cusack). He has written songs, written for large and small ensembles, and scored short films, feature films, TV shows and commercials. He was part of the editorial teams of Musics and Collusion magazines, writes about music in various contexts and was a senior lecturer in music at the University of Westminster. With Blanca Regina, he is part of Unpredictable Series, which produces events and sound and video recordings of experimental music and art.
Nick Stephens (b1946) spent most of his teenage playing in R&B bands in Europe. Aged 20 he joined The Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra and during this period experienced his first John Stevens Workshop In 1976 he joined John Stevens Away and worked regularly with JS until his death in 1994. In 1994 Stephens formed ‘Calling Signals with Norwegian reeds player Frode Gjerstad. The group has included Paul Rutherford, Louis Moholo, Hasse Poulsen, Paal Nillsen-Love, Lol Coxhill, Jon Corbett and Tony Marsh. Gjerstad and Stephens continue to work together on various projects. In the 90’s he also worked regularly with Dudu Pukwana, his own Septet and Dangerous Musics with Jon Corbett, Roger Turner and Pat Thomas.
John Butcher
John Butcher’s work ranges through improvisation, his own compositions, multitracked pieces and explorations with feedback, unusual acoustics and non-concert locations.
Originally a physicist, he left academia in ’82, and has since collaborated with hundreds of musicians – Derek Bailey, John Tilbury, John Stevens, The EX, Akio Suzuki, Gerry Hemingway, Polwechsel, Gino Robair, Rhodri Davies, Okkyung Lee, John Edwards, Toshi Nakamura, Paul Lovens, Eddie Prevost, Mark Sanders, Christian Marclay, Otomo Yoshihide, Phil Minton, and Andy Moor – to name a few. He is well known as a solo performer who attempts to engage with the uniqueness of place. Resonant Spaces is a collection of site-specific performances collected during a tour of unusual locations in Scotland and the Orkney Islands.
Stale Liavik Solberg is a Norwegian drummer who is a integral part of Oslo’s thriving improvised music scene. Working with Pan-Scan Ensemble, Party Knullers, Will it float?, Silva-Rasmussen-Solberg trio and in duos with John Butcher, Martin Kuchen and John Russell his open and attentive drumming has delighted audiences in many different corners of the world.
