hunjiya Biography

HUNJIYA (hun-jee-yuh) is the musical alias of singer, songwriter, and producer, Alice Kim. Combining confessional storytelling with soul-infused guitar riffs and alluring vocals, Kim creates a novel mixture of pop, alternative R&B, and folk. Her affinity for wrapping compelling lyrics around innovative instrumentals drives her distinct and unique sound.

Born in Seoul, South Korea and raised in a small town in upstate New York, the 22-year old songstress got her start in the arts by observing her mother, a visual artist herself. As she developed her creativity through several mediums including, but not limited to, drawing, painting, and fashion, Kim started to venture into different forms of art. After experimenting with various instruments at a young age, Hunjiya discovered an aptitude for guitar, producing, and songwriting as she entered high school. Initially teaching herself these skills, she was eventually able to expand on them in an academic environment at the Frost School of Music in The University of Miami. In 2015 Kim was chosen as one of six finalists in the Singer-Songwriter category for The National YoungArts Foundation. A year later she was one of fourteen songwriters chosen nationwide for The Johnny Mercer Songwriting Project in Chicago. Additionally, she's performed at events such as Art Basel, Okeechobee Music Festival, and Sofar Sounds Seoul. Her music has been used and recognized by the likes of Vogue, H&M, Line of Best Fit, Lyrical Lemonade, Earmilk, and Desigual.

In 2017, Kim released her stripped down, self-produced/self-written debut EP, Lineage, which started out as a personal gift for her grandparents who had never heard her music prior to the project. Combining both Korean and English lyrics, each song is written from the perspective of her grandparents and describes how they fell in love with one another. Inspired by her family, the EP exemplifies the diversity of Hunjiya’s influences and how she weaves them into her music.

Two years later, Hunjiya released her second project and full length album, “Look After August” which explores the concepts of self-identity and self-care in her early twenties. Look After August, her debut album, holds significant meaning for Kim. Signifying her request to take care during a month that often poses challenges, the album title gently pleads listeners to look forward and proceed with hope after the month -and all its trials- is over
