Between the ages of 7 and 22 he pursued conventional musical studies leading to an M.A. in composition at the National Conservatoire in Bucharest and after that period he became interested in electroacoustic music. In 1976, Dumitrescu founded Hyperion Ensemble. In 1990, with his wife Ana-Maria Avram, he formed the record label Edition Modern.
