Broke In Stereo Biography

Broke in Stereo is the alias of American performing artist, songwriter, and producer Cabell Harris. Both a masterful multi-faceted guitarist and a powerful vocalist, his performances are known to be individually unique incorporating spontaneous improvisation both harmonically and melodically. As an alternative blues rock artist the obvious influence of the music is rooted in blues and alternative rock, though as an experimental artist both live and in the studio, Harris draws on a wide variety of influences.

First emerging with the alias out of Brooklyn, releasing tracks from the debut EP “Ear Art” in 2014 (as well as other now unreleased tracks) as a garage artist he was found and encouraged by professionals and enthusiasts to pursue the project seriously. Debuting live in Brooklyn as a duo (live guitar/vocals and a DJ) then immediately gravitating toward a live trio he played throughout the NYC club scene. He debuted in the LA scene 2015 and promptly returned to tour the western US with a trio in 2016. Since then releasing the single "Outer-Net" 2017, full-length album “Auditory Artifacts” 2017, and the single "Johnny's Got a Gun" 2018. Broke in Stereo has since established a reputation as an impressive and raw live performer as well as a versatile and inventive producer.

Harris grew up in the rural hills of Northern California on a ranch outside a small farming town. Growing up in a small cottage with no heat, power outages and on occasion no water; he was accustomed to living in close quarters with nature. Early in childhood Harris was recognized as academically gifted. He began his musical pursuits at age four on the violin, later learning piano, guitar, bass and drums. As a teenager Harris spent hundreds of hours with 4 track Tascam and a synthesizer making hip hop beats and loops. A big fan of gangster rap and hip hop, the impact and influence on his music is evident to this day.

As a guitarist he became obsessive all throughout high school and began his teaching career. In 2005, he was awarded numerous scholarships and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, studying composition and performance. He spent thousands of hours practicing guitar, composing and songwriting. In his later academic career at Berklee he became fascinated with a-tonal and melodically angular music which gave a strong and unusual color and quirk to his typically traditionally tonal songs.

Following graduation from Berklee in 2009, Harris moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina. After some time he grew restless of the city and long work hours, deciding to leave he began traveling Latin America. Walking, busing and hitch hiking across Latin America Harris found himself traveling across nearly every country before returning to the US.

In 2010, he returned to the US reappearing on the scene in Southern California where he worked as a music teacher at a Piano institute in La Jolla. Keeping a large journal of songs he had built up from his travels in South America, Harris began to focus his energy on songwriting and began collaborating with numerous artists out of the Los Angeles area. In 2013 Harris moved to New York with his then girlfriend, establishing a life out of Flatbush Brooklyn teaching guitar. In 2014 he began writing and releasing tracks under the new alias Broke in Stereo. From Brooklyn it was a steady rise to the now established roots out of Los Angeles and regular tours of the western US.

The music’s sound stems from an eclectic combination of influences that range from rock, blues, folk, soul, jazz, and hip-hop. Described as blues rock with an experimental and alternative sound. The BMI affiliated artist can be found in the catalogues of Crucial Music.
