About this concert
Programme:
Felix Mendelssohn - Viola Sonata in C minor
Fanny Mendelssohn - Lieder
Robert Schumann - Marchenbilder, Op.113
Clara Schumann - Romances
Rebecca Clarke - Viola Sonata (1919)
In this concert, one of the world’s greatest violists, Tabea Zimmermann, honours a fellow violist, ‘the glorious Rebecca Clarke’ in the words of Arthur Rubinstein. When Clarke anonymously entered her ravishing viola sonata into the Berkshire Chamber Music competition in 1919 few could believe a young woman capable of such assurance and expressive mastery.
Zimmermann and highly regarded pianist Denes Varjon contrast Clarke with the young Mendelssohn’s turbulent Sonata in C, Schumann’s bewitching Märchenbilder, Clara Schumann’s poignant Romances and the haunting poetry of Fanny Mendelssohn’s songs.
‘Zimmermann brings us Clarke’s Sonata in mesmerising focus and saturated colour.’ BBC Radio 3 Record Review
