Mugz Biography

muGz is more than your typical 26-year-old rapper from Montreal. His ability as a storyteller to share his personal experiences, creating an emotional connection with his words and the listener, is what has powered his sudden and swift rise in the rap game. Four years ago, muGz and his boys would exchange freestyle rhymes back and forth recounting the night’s events for fun. However, the influences of Ludacris, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent and his older cousin Mezziah, who mentored him, made him take rap far more seriously. The uppercase “G” in muGz’ name symbolizes growth. After paving his way on the mix-tape circuit and putting out videos and singles, he’s taken the next step with the release of his 7-track G.O.D. EP on May 29th. “I’m a firm believer in ‘One life, One chance,” muGz says. “I decided to go with the title Gone One Day because you never know when your time will come. So before that day comes, just make sure you live it up.” The EP’s self-titled introduction sets the table for what to expect - lush production, well-crafted hooks, witty punch lines and intricate wordplay. If muGz rap style leans to what some would consider mainstream, it’s no less personal. His anthemic first single “The Dream,” fits right at home in the clubs as it does on the airwaves. “I wrote that on a flight to Morocco last year,” muGz says. “We flew in my producer, TMO from Houston and actually had time to craft the song and stir it up in the kitchen, rather than him just sending me the beat.” He was the first rapper out of Quebec and one of a handful of Canadian MC’s to have his video for “Lonely Girl” premiere on BET’s 106 & Park TV show in New York. The clip was also nominated for a 2012 Stylus Award for Video of the Year. Despite the international and national adulation, muGz continues to garner strong support at home. He lead all nominees with six nominations at the 2012 Montreal Hip-Hop Awards, including People’s Choice and English Male Artist of the Year. Part of establishing himself in his hometown, was establishing a solid base. “Black Rose is the label we started two years ago, just to have our own foundation and our company,” muGz says. “I like having control and knowing what’s going on in my career. I get to be hands on with my project, it helps keep my vision true.” He plans to realize that vision, touring and performing his music live, “I’m really looking forward to seeing how it connects with the fans.” As a wordsmith and songwriter, muGz places a premium on words. Many of those words are permanent reminders and inspiration making up the 20 plus tattoos on his body. ‘One life, One chance,’ etched in his forearm in black ink, is his most personal. In the here-today-gone-tomorrow era of rappers, muGz will long continue to bring that mentality to his music.
