About this concert
NSO Music Director Gianandrea Noseda will be at the baton as the National Symphony Orchestra performs works influenced by American folk music. Amazingly evocative of its Old West setting, Aaron Copland's Billy the Kid Suite kicks off the concert. Then mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili takes the stage for Berio's Folk Songs. And the fitting finale features Dvořák's Ninth Symphony, which has been wildly popular ever since its premiere in 1893 -- in fact, Neil Armstrong famously took a recording of it with him to the moon. Subtitled From the New World, this masterpiece of the classical canon fuses folk tunes, eastern Europe rhythms and sounds from Dvorák's native Bohemia.
