About this concert
DOORS: 7pm | SHOW: 8pm ABOUT THE ARTIST MIKE LOVE Genre: Reggae  Mike Love In this modern age of music, genres blend together as naturally as the river flows into the sea. With the expansive library of all the music of the world from every time period at our fingertips, creative artists seem to be more and more liberated from the archaic mentality of being pigeonholed into one genre or demographic. Mike Love is at the forefront of this movement. With a foundation rooted in the spirituality and message-based music of Reggae and Rastafari, he blends the sounds of progressive and classic rock, pop, R & B, soul, blues, flamenco, jazz and so much more. Healing is at the core of his music. With ever evolving live performances, Love keeps his organically grown fanbase returning again and again to witness the evolution of tried and true fan favorites, and the ever-expanding repertoire of new music that is constantly surfacing. Fans often leave live performances remarking about how they have just been to church, or had a bad day turned around. Born and raised on the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i, Love was brought up in an environment surrounded by musical influence and the inspiring natural landscape of his island home. Forging a deep connection with nature, his message of returning to a more natural and spiritually grounded way of living was solidified at an early age. Growing up under the musical guidance of his father and grandfather, both composers, as well as his steel pan instructor Frank Leto and piano teacher Beth Uale, Mike's natural musical instincts towards melody and harmony were shaped and deepened. Mike started playing the guitar at age 15 and played in multiple bands throughout his teenage years, playing his first live gig with a band at age 16. It wasn't until he joined forces with local musicians Tavana, Brad Watanabe (currently of The Green) and longtime collaborator and current drummer Sam "Ites" Gonsalves to form the band Melodious Solutions, that his musical vision started to take shape. Furthering his talents as a composer/lyricist and arranger, Love subsequently fronted the 10-piece band Dubkonscious for a few years, entering into his first studio experience as producer as well on the band's album "At the Foot of the Mountain". In 2008, he started a solo weekly residence, performing at a local Irish Pub on Mondays. During his long four-hour sets there, he developed a unique one-man-band style, using looping, multiple instruments, and an array of different vocal techniques and musical styles. As his creativity and delivery in a solo format blossomed, so did his audiences. Slowly and organically, this became his main project and his solo career was born. In December of 2012, Love released his first solo album, the critically acclaimed fan favorite "The Change I'm Seeking". With instant classics like "Permanent Holiday", "Barbershop", and "Human Race", his fanbase rapidly grew, worldwide, with the success of a handful of viral videos on YouTube. Love also delved into more passionate subjects on the album, with tracks like "Earthlings" exhibiting his desire to "Veganize" the world and wake people up to the injustices of animal cruelty, and "No More War", a call to "bring the troops back home" from these "wars that no one really wants". It was clear that finally Love had found his voice and was ready to share his music with the world. He began touring that year with best friend and musical soul-mate Paula Fuga, playing shows to enthusiatic crowds in the western U.S. supporting bands like Groundation and Nahko and Medicine for the People. As the buzz spread, so did the reach of Mike and his band. The next year brought them all over the U.S. playing club shows and festivals alike. Love supported Trevor Hall and Xavier Rudd on major tours throughout the eastern U.S. and Canada, winning over many fans in the grassroots style he had become accustomed to. You'll often catch Mike saying "I just keep playing the music, and this thing just keeps growing. It has a life of its own and I'm just grateful for it." International touring soon followed, with warm and enthusiastic receptions across Europe, Central America, Australia, Polynesia and more. Throughout it all, Love has remained humble, citing the healing power of the music that comes from a larger place as the sole reason this all has been possible. With the release of his second album "Love Will Find a Way" and follow-up companion album "Love Overflowing" featuring sing-along tunes like "I Love You" and "No Regrets", he solidified the bond with his fans and exhibited the evolution that lovers of his music had come to expect. Returning to the studio with road-tested material and a more intimate connection with a worldwide audience had obviously resulted in a more refined and focused sound and ideology. Currently, he has formed a super-band, hand-picked from all of the top musicians he's worked with over the years, dubbed aptly, Mike Love and the Full Circle. They have honed their skills and come together as a tight unit at home on O'ahu and have now begun to tour, taking Love's music to even greater heights. As they prepare to return to the studio in 2018, we can anticipate that the new album they are concocting will be the most dynamic, heartfelt and spirited offering yet. In the years to come we can only expect more growth, more innovation, and of course, more Love. Website Mikey Pauker Mikey Pauker (pronounced pow-ker) is a folk/world artist from Berkeley, California. His new album, ASCENSION, is an invitation to listen to the call of our inner wilderness and to greet our darkness with understanding and an open heart. It was recorded in raw, live instrumental sessions — a departure from Mikey’s more electronic past recordings — under the guidance of Grammy-nominated producer Warren Huart (The Fray, Trevor Hall, Matisyahu). With songs like “Say Yes” and “I AM”, listeners are elevated with catchy melodic hooks and reggae/rock beats. The “RISE Vulnerable Rally” music video swept the world touching the hearts of over 1 million viewers this past year. Growing up in Orange County, Mikey’s early experiences at underground shows exposed him to the intense, primal energy of live music, as well as the strong community bonds that form in an authentic and close-knit scene. Inspired by teachers who blend yoga and mystical practices he went to study in Jerusalem, soaking up the hidden teachings of his ancestral lineage. These spiritual dimensions guided his artistic development as he explored ecstatic music festivals and mystical religious traditions. His music implores us all to look within, sit with our darkness, and transform it into light. Mikey’s sound blends elements of folk, reggae, and hip-hop, incorporating English and Hebrew roots into his devotional songwriting. Mikey’s music draws from influences such as early Bob Marley, Van Morrison, and The Police, and listeners will immediately identify his style to the likes of Michael Franti, Trevor Hall and artists such as Mike Love and Stick Figure. This past year Mikey has supported Rebelution, Stephen Marley, Matisyahu, Dovavon Frankenreiter, The Polish Ambassador, Mike Love, and Stop Light Observations. Notable performance highlights include Red Rocks, Suwanne Hullaween, Electric Forest, Beloved, Bhakti Fest, Enchanted Forest, and Chant 4 Change on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Mike was awesome as usual! First time seeing the green. The sound and lights were way off for both styles of music. The dude thought he was in techno rave blinded by the lights.

Mike Love Biography

Revolutionary music may seem hard to come by in these days and times. Long gone is the era of artists like Bob Marley, The Clash, Stevie Wonder and Patti Smith getting airplay and bringing their messages to the masses. But that doesn’t mean that the revolution isn’t still brewing in the hearts and minds of many people around the globe.

Meet Mike Love. One of reggae music’s rising stars. Born and raised in Oahu, Hawaii to a musical family that spans generations, Mike Love brings a multitude of influences to the table, all tied together by the common goal of making the world a better place. Through the grassroots method of releasing his albums independently, on his own Love Not War Records label, and performing 250 plus shows a year, Love has built an ever growing following for his unique and inspiring music. He has toured with many artists in the circles of conscious, roots music, including Trevor Hall, Xavier Rudd, Nahko and many more. Over the past few years he performed to enthusiastic audiences at the California Roots Festival, Wakarusa, Wanderlust and the Montreal Jazz Fest, just to name a few. He has also enjoyed great success and exposure through the web on outlets like YouTube, with one of his videos just recently hitting 9 million views!

On his award winning debut album, The Change I’m Seeking, Love harkens the legends of roots reggae in both his lyrics and his sound, but never relies on any one genre to hold him down. Coming from a wealth of influences, Love fuses the simple rhythms of classic reggae with the complex changes of the classical and rock music he was first trained on to come up with a style wholly unique to him. On his follow up album, Love Will Find A Way, released September 1st, 2015, Love further refines his sound and message, with grand and striking arrangements and deep heartfelt emotions, he takes you on a journey which many describe as "life changing". He calls for immediate and drastic change in environmental impact on "Step Lightly", affirms his connection with fans on "I Love You, and shows a vulnerable and touching insight into his personal life on "Advaya's Song" and "No Regrets". Following up with his most eclectic blend of styles, "Love Overflowing" perfectly compliments the previous release, with a downplayed mood of depth and reflection in the music.

But it’s his message, his passion, the wisdom behind his words that truly resonate with his fans. “It’s always been about the healing,” Mike Love explains, “I’ve never been into music that was shallow. I’m still learning about where I’m going and where I want to be. All the music is a learning tool for me too. I just make myself open to it and the messages come through. It’s just as teaching and healing for me as it is for anyone.”

His songs take you on a journey, one of healing and inspiration. One designed to help you on your path to knowledge, wisdom and understanding. On “Permanent Holiday” he takes you on a lyrical quest for freedom, both his and yours. He laments the ills of the world but also discusses solutions and ideas to change them. On "Earthlings" he sings about being vegan, about animal cruelty and about holding yourself accountable for your actions. These are songs with messages designed to affect change in a time when it is so desperately necessary.

Love and his band have already toured in the U.S., Canada, Central America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and East Asia. Mike Love has shared the stage with artists like Michael Franti, Trevor Hall, Nahko & Medicine For The People, Xavier Rudd, Rebelution, John Butler Trio, Groundation, Steel Pulse, Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson. 2017 is shaping up to be a big year of even more growth for Love and his musical family with plenty of touring and work on a brand new record!
