About this concert
Bristol’s Batu is an ambassador of an emerging strain of UK techno that prizes steely textures and linear shapes to an almost psychedelic degree. In this unabashedly peak-time set, recorded on a February night between 5 and 7 a.m., Batu wields that aesthetic like a corkscrew, molding repetitive drum patterns into long, fluid lines that drive cleanly and relentlessly forward. It’s a style of mixing that allows him to drop some pretty mammoth bangers without ever bashing his listeners over the head with them. And when he does diverge from the rolling, four-to-the-floor pulse, the explosions of broken beats sound all the more earth-shattering.
