Jef Neve (born March 8, 1977) is a Belgian jazz pianist and composer.Jef Neve played in local bands as a teenager and started to write his first compositions. At 17, he was a member of the radio band Mr. Zebedee; This was followed by collaboration with various jazz and pop bands as well as classical ensembles and theater productions. He studied at the Lemmensinstituut in Leuven and earned his master`s degree in jazz and classical piano in 2000, and in chamber music in 2001 as well. During his studies, he attended master classes of Brad Mehldau, Martial Solal, Lew Tabackin, Toots Thielemans, Billy Hart, Bill Carrothers, Kenny Werner and Bruce Barth. He also appeared as a soloist with the Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Michel Tilkin; In 2002 he worked as a pianist and composer with the dance company Dathe in London. In 2003, he and his trio released their first album under their own name (Blue Saga `), followed by It`s Gone (2004). For his third album Nobody is Illegal, he moved to the label Universal. With his trio he guested u. a. also on the Jazzahead in Bremen. In addition to the trio project he works for the vibraphone player Pascal Schumacher (Face to Face, Enja 2010) and in a duo with the singer José James (For All, 2010). He also appeared with his band with the project Facing East - The Music of John Coltrane. Neve also works with the band Groove Thing as a keyboardist.In the field of classical music he appeared in 2005 with the Goldberg Variations of Johann Sebastian Bach; In 2008 he gave several concerts with Tenor Koen Vereertbrugghen and performs regularly with the oboist Piet Van Bockstal. On behalf of the Bijloke Muziekcentrum he wrote a piano concerto which was premiered in Brussels and Ghent in 2009 with the Brussels Philharmonic under the direction of Michel Tabachnik. After a Gershwin program in 2007/2009, the world premiere of his composition for choir, piano and orchestra followed in 2010. Jef Neve also wrote film scores, u. a. for Dagen Zonder Lief (2007) and The Misfortunates by Felix Van Groeningen. He is currently working with a trio from bassist Ruben Samama (b. 1985) and drummer Teun Verbruggen. His album For All We Know, which he had recorded with the singer José James, received in 2011 the Prix Mimi Perrin du Jazz Vocal. The Brussels Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Jef Neve, recorded the film score of Ludovic Bource in The Artist, which won the Best Film Music category at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards.On February 12, 2017, an asteroid was named after him: (23691) Jefneve
