About this concert
When Grammy Award-winner Rhiannon Giddens met Italian pianist & percussionist Francesco Turrisi, well versed in jazz, early music & Mediterranean music, they found that her 19th century American minstrel banjo tunes & his traditional Sicilian tambourine rhythms fit naturally together. Their album there is no Other comes out in May through Nonesuch. Rhiannon Giddens is a masterful singer, banjo & fiddle player, blending American musical genres like gospel, jazz, blues & country. Her prodigious voice & fierce spirit come alive in her performances, bringing audiences to their feet, showcasing her extraordinary emotional range & dazzling vocals. She's previously won accolades with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, has released two other great albums on Nonesuch - Freedom Highway & Tomorrow Is My Turn. She recently released Our Native Daughters, a collaborative project with Leyla McCalla, Amythyst Kiah & Alli Russell of Birds of Chicago.

Exceptional. I’ve listened to her albums for several years. This is the first time I’ve seen her live and it was better than expected. Charly Lowry who opened also had a great voice.

Rhiannon Giddens Biography

I started singing at an ungodly age, standing in my crib and warbling at passing family members. I didn't really think of it as a career until I went to the School of Science and Math and realized that I never wanted to do another algorithm. So I went to Oberlin Conservatory and did the whole opera/recital thing, burned out and discovered the banjo! The rest is history.
