Grammy-nominated pianist, vocalist and songwriter Judy Carmichael is considered one of the greatest pianists in the swing tradition and one of the most sensitive vocalists, and will celebrate the music of swing piano greats with an evening of gems from the Great American Songbook, as well as her own witty compositions live at the Delray Beach Playhouse. Count Basie himself nicknamed Judy “Stride” in reference to her mastery of that early piano style popularized by Thomas “Fats” Waller, Count Basie and James P. Johnson. Of Judy’s singing, America’s premier jazz magazine, JazzTimes writes: “Carmichael exhibits a truly remarkable ability to channel Peggy Lee’s breathy invitingness and her befogged insouciance (and) echoes the intense perspicacity of the solo albums of Annie Ross. In other words, she winningly blends two of the all-time finest, most intuitive jazz singers.” Carmichael appears frequently on radio and TV throughout the world and maintains a busy international touring schedule. She is popular with both jazz and cabaret audiences with her soulful, swinging interpretations of the Great American Songbook, and equally impressive hilarious, improvisational anecdotes. Her wit and musical knowledge come together on her weekly NPR radio broadcast/podcast Judy Carmichael’s Jazz Inspired -- now in its eighteenth year -- where she talks with celebrated creative artists about their love for jazz and how it inspires them, everyone from Chevy Chase and Robert Redford to Tony Bennett and Billy Joel. Carmichael has played the major international concert halls and festivals from Carnegie Hall to the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice (the first concert ever presented by the museum) to programs with Melissa Etheridge, Joel Grey, Michael Feinstein, Jools Holland, Steve Ross and the Smothers Brothers. Judy will be joined by Chicago guitarist Andy Brown, whose YouTube views are a million plus!
