Dennis and Leslie McKay make up the husband and wife duo of McKay Project. Together, they have a story of hope and second chances. They have a real desire to share Jesus and let people know that God loves them and He never gives up on us. On stage they weave a blend of live acoustic music and harmony with Dennis on guitar and Leslie on bass. McKay Project brings a mix of blues and country to southern gospel music while staying true to the traditional style that so many have come to love.
Dennis is originally from Vernon, Alabama and grew up in a multi-talented musical family. He began playing the guitar when he was 11 years old and soon found himself on stage performing with his family group, The McKay Family. He traveled all over the country for several years performing southern gospel music while his father, Robert McKay, preached and shared Jesus.
Leslie is originally from Damascus, Arkansas and grew up singing in church while her father lead music and her mother played piano. She began learning piano at the age of 7 and later added vocal training that continued throughout college. Leslie spent 3 years with the Williams Singers of Williams Baptist College traveling to various churches in the southeast ministering through music. She has since added guitar and bass to her list of talents.
Shortly after Dennis and Leslie began their lives together as husband and wife, the Lord began drawing them into music ministry. McKay Project was formed about a year later and in 2012 they released their first self-titled project, “McKay Project” under the M.A.C. Records label which is owned by Dennis and Leslie.
In 2013, Millennium Music Group released the single, “Barstool to a Church Pew” which went to #44 on the CVM Country Gospel chart and their song “Daddy, The Preacher Man” stayed in the CVM Country Gospel chart for several months.
2014 marked the release of their second project called “In Step” which is a collection of old familiar gospel songs and hymns as well as a few originals written by Dennis and Leslie. In 2014 they were nominated for the CVM Duo of the Year and ICGMA Duo of the Year.
In 2015, they were again among the Top 5 nominees in the ICGMA category for Duo of the Year as well as Band of the Year. Dennis was among the Top 10 nominees for the ICGMA Producer of the Year.
In 2016, McKay Project received the honor of being named ICGMA Duo of the Year! They were also nominated in several other categories such as Band of the Year and Group of the Year. Also, in 2016 McKay Project released their single to radio, “Get Saved” which has been in the Cashbox and SGN Scoops Country Christian charts.
During 2016, McKay Project began a partnership with Lonesome Road Ministries (formerly RIG Ministries) which is a ministry that primarily reaches out to truck drivers by placing free cds with music and messages in truck stops across the country. The ministry has evolved into a “whosoever will come” ministry and reaches people from all walks of like. Their motto is “a church without walls”. Through Studio 115A and M.A.C. Records, Dennis and Leslie worked with Gary Rayburn of Lonesome Road to produce two cd projects with Christian and positive country music with a truck driving theme. Lonesome Road - Volume 1 was released in the spring of 2017 and Volume 2 was released in the spring of 2018. McKay Project believes in the ministry of Lonesome Road and their vision to reach people (especially truckers) across the country - “spread a net with the gospel that will cover the highways of the country” as described by Gary Rayburn. You will find McKay Project at various events around the country directly connected to Lonesome Road Ministries.
2017: McKay Project released their 3rd project called McKay Project 3. The duo was also awarded the ICGMA Crossover Artist of the Year and Dennis was awarded the ICGMA Instrumentalist of the Year.
2018: McKay Project had their first #1 song, "Taking Me Home" off the project, Lonesome Road-Volume 1, in May of 2018. They just recently released their newest single to radio that was co-written by Dennis and James Payne called, "Love You Like Mary". McKay Project also received a Top 5 nomination in the Diamond Awards for Christian Country Group of the Year.
