About this concert
In the crypt at the Louis Marchesi (accessed via a flight of stairs) ROAD NOT TAKEN Playing their unique brand of melancholy songs and tunes, Road Not Taken are starting to make waves on the UK folk scene. From humble beginnings in 2014, after coming together to perform at Downend Folk Club in North Bristol, the band has seen a rapid rise, soon finding themselves supporting the likes of Lady Maisery, Rachael McShane & The Cartographers and Jim Moray, and spreading their wings further afield with performances at Oxford Folk Weekend, The Great Almonry Folk Weekend and Priston Festival. A debut EP, Back Into Storyland, was released in 2016, and since then the four-piece have continued to grow and develop their sound, with one review hailing them as "the best folk band in Bristol", whilst describing their sound as "songs given enough of a twist to make them something new. It feels as though they've been draped in glittering cobwebs and that is a very fine thing indeed." 2019 promises to be a big year for the band, with appearances lined up at Bristol Folk Festival, Wimborne Minster Folk Festival, Beardy Folk Festival, Keynsham Music Festival, Priston Festival and London Folk Festival, and a full UK tour in September to mark the release of their first full-length album. Road Not Taken are made up of singer Anita Dobson, guitarist Ant Miles, fiddle-player Claire Hamlen, and multi-instrumentalist Joe Hamlen. Her songs pull together poetry and stripped back acoustic folk; metaphor, water imagery and thoughts about thought are often present in her lyrics. Robyn-Astrid has been compared to the likes of Nico, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and Bjork, evoking raw feeling in her audiences, and often goosebumps, through words and melodies that are delicate, ethereal and at times haunting. The album "Rille", released in 2017, was aired with an interview on BBC Introducing Norfolk and is heavily influenced by Jenny Hval, poet Alice Oswald and years of cold, clear winters. www.robynastrid.bandcamp.com/track/across-a-black-water
