This concert of repertoire championed by important American string quartets from a century ago is part of the Miro Quartet’s ongoing exploration of historic string quartet programs. Mozart’s "Hunt" Quartet is a genial work infused with sweet melodies, while Schubert’s reflects on mortality. Its turbulent opening (a set of variations on his song “Death and the Maiden”), furious scherzo, and manic finale make this one of the composer’s most riveting works. Gentler music by Glière and Franck provide contrast to Schubert’s intensity.
