About this concert
THIS IS AN EXTRA DATE! Due to the advance sell out of the Wednesday night we have added another extra date to the line up so that you don't have to miss out! TUESDAY 26th MARCH. Local musician and critically acclaimed song writer Ruth Theodore is embarking on a further few tours this year and this month she's touring with her full four piece band and stopping off at the Hyde Tavern. By all accounts Ruth Theodore is truly unique artist and performer, creating charming and humble yet challenging and compelling pieces of original work. Her natural lyricism and deliberate turn of phrase is that of a skilled writer in command of, and having fun with, the idea of contemporary songwriting. Armed with a dazzling array of unconventional guitar tunings, a Keith Jarrett-esque 'off the wall' piano style, and some serious musicianship, Ruth tells stories with captivating vocal dexterity. Confident and original The Guardian Born in chandlers ford and schooled in Winchester Ruth has a colourful background. Aged 5 she was told that she would never physically be able to play guitar and following a sledging accident, aged 9, that left her unable to speak, singing and playing the guitar were unexpected career choices. Yet by the age of 14 Ruth was earning money as a singer and guitarist, busking in doorways in Winchester, and Southampton on detuned guitars before moving to a house boat in East London. Remaining true to her own unique sound and signature guitar style Ruth has gone on to perform her songs and tour alongside legendary artists such as Ani Difranco, Dar Williams, Jane Siberry, Jeff Lang and Hamell On Trial, for packed out venues including The London Palladium, Bush Hall, The Union Chapel, The Borderline and Glastonbury Festival. Ruth has released four critically acclaimed albums to date, three released through homegrown label River Rat Records and the most recent, recorded in the US with internationally acclaimed producer and bassist Todd Sickafoose (Anais Mitchell/Ani Difranco) in Oregon USA which was released through Aveline Records. This month Ruth is touring alongside british muscians based more locally. The band features the jazz piano of Southampton musician Jonathan Fashole-Luke, the sought after double bass skills of Rick Foot from Wareham and the soulful vocals and drums from her long time collaborator Wayne Thompson from London. Ruth's natural flair for off kilter song writing and lyricism still somehow remain the highlight of her energetic and humorous shows and with backing musicians of this standard, thats really saying something. "Having recieved critical acclaim for her four outstanding and unique records, you'd be crazy to miss this chance to see her"
