Public Sounds Biography

"I was driving to school when the name Public Sounds popped into my head" states Markis Hernandez. This was in 2009. Since then Markis has made it his life goal to make a band around this name. Many musicians have come and gone over the years but this current group of musicians have far excelled and exceeded any expectations Markis has ever had. "It's like this band created itself. This not my band. This band is everyone and anyone that is currently involved and that has played under the name." During weekly brunch gigs Chris Patsis and Markis would entertain themselves during set breaks by discussing having a group of their own. As the conversations continued so did this desire. Markis recalls, "Chris mentioning to me about his friend Kevin Cripanuk with whom he went to school with. We met and everyone seemed to be on the same page. Things started happening a lot faster once Kevin was on board." Over time Chris, Kevin and Markis began sifting through tunes they had written to see how much material they have to start off with. "Chris and Kevin's music definitely inspired me" says Markis, "That was the moment I felt like this was a definite possibility." Markis continued to look for musicians that fit the vision Chris and Kevin had for this music and band. "I came across a man by the name of Jason Stander" Markis exclaims, "and after presenting this option for drums to Chris and Kevin getting a hold of Jason became the top priority." A few emails and phone conversations is all it took to make it happen. Everyone gathered at Jason's place and played some tunes. There was a definite energy in the air that night and the decision was all too clear that this is the drummer. That same night everyone pined over who could possibly play keys and Jason instantly stated, "I know a guy who would be perfect." with our current track record of positive outcomes we couldn't deny Mark Mayea an audience. The following week Mark joined the others and it's as if they had been a band for years already. Markis chimed in. "Is everyone cool with the name Public Sounds Collective?" and with no further hesitation Public Sounds was reborn and its the best its ever sounded. The amazing thing about this recount is that all this happened in a matter of months. It only took the band one month of practice before they did their first gig and received positive press in the papers. "The fact that we were regarded for our tightness on this show with only weeks of practice definitely highlights the musicianship and cohesiveness the members have together."
