About this concert
MANANA//Cuba returns to London following last year's critically acclaimed collaboration series at the Pickle Factory, with a night designed to push the boundaries of electronic music. We will be showcasing a very special live collaboration between legendary German electronic musician Burnt Friedman and Iran’s leading Tombak player Mohammad Reza Mortazavi; hosting the launch of acclaimed Afro-Cuban/Iranian/jazz/electronic quartet Ariwo's second album; and presenting two DJ sets by revered Dutch techno DJ/producer Conforce, and Manchester's rising dub-techno stars Space Afrika. …. ++ ARIWO (LIVE)"Formidably integrated. A sonic terra incognita guided only by a hypnotic and dub-wise focus on forward motion" — The Wire: Adventures In Modern Music Ariwo means "Noise" in Yoruba. The band brings together acclaimed Iranian electronic composer, Pouya Ehsaei; Carlos Acosta and Irakere’s Latin Grammy winning Afro-Cuban 'percussion virtuoso' Hammadi Valdes; figurehead of London's Cuban music scene, Oreste Noda; and Ropeadope’s Canadian jazz trumpeter, Jay Phelps. >> Watch a video of their live performance: http://bit.ly/2RIuERy>> Listen to their first album on Bandcamp: http://bit.ly/2t6L8Yn ++ BURNT FRIEDMAN & MOHAMMAD REZA MORTAZAVI (LIVE)"What Mortazavi and Friedman have in common is their shared expertise in uneven, cyclical rhythms – the foundation of their trance-like art music, which is both subtle and ecstatic” — Boomkat.com Burnt Friedman is one of Germany’s most long established and highly rated electronic musicians. He has been working on several notable collaborations with the likes of Jaki Liebezeit (from CAN), Flanger, Steve Jansen and David Sylvian (as Nine Horses). In 2000 Friedman launched his own record label, Nonplace, with 46 releases to date. By the age of just 20 Mohammad Reza Mortazavi was already considered by many as the world’s best Tombak player. Over the course of a stellar career which has seen him perform solo at the Philharmonie in Berlin he has found time to developed over 30 new striking and finger techniques which have revolutionised the traditional way of playing.>> Watch a video of their live performance: http://bit.ly/2SXVqT2>> Listen to their album on Bandcamp: http://bit.ly/2slLpnc ++ CONFORCE (DJ SET)"A solitary Conforce release can never be described as predictable, with each unknown entity having the potential to take you on an emotional rollercoaster or a primal abandon" — Inverted AudioRevered Dutch producer/DJ Boris Bunnik is best know for aliases Conforce (techno) and Versalife (electro). Releasing through Delsin, Clone and Rush Hour he has been a pillar of Dutch electronic music for the last decade - always bringing clarity, space and momentum to his productions and legendary DJ sets. >> Listen to his HATE podcast: http://bit.ly/2GXq0L8 ++ SPACE AFRIKA (DJ SET)"Space Afrika are the Manchester duo breathing new life into dub techno" — FACT Magazine With their slow-stepping, spacious urban dubscapes, Space Afrika harness ambient, Detroit techno and shades of early nineties Sheffield with a fresh and open approach to composition — this is dub techno stripped-down, sealed in a time capsule and sent back from the near future. Driving, echo-laden deep beats form the bed for a heavily subaquatic sound palette with undercurrents of cybernetic dread.>> Check out their NTS shows: http://bit.ly/2SHdaCg....MANANA is a events company and record label that connects the electronic music community to masters of traditional music. Past collaborations include Plaid + Obbatuke; Soundspecies + Ache Meyi; DJ Tennis + Tito; Kwake Bass + Raven; and Pouya Ehsaei, Binker Golding, Oreste Noda & Oren Marshall. Burnt Friedman Biography

Navigating an atypical musical expedition, Burnt Friedman´s unusual trajectory curved its way through an adolescent obsession with drums and a singular dedication to amassing a self-recorded audio-library dating from 1978. What followed in the late 80ties was a period of art academia, then immersion in the first flurry of collaborative music projects. Since 1993 he released records under various names, such as Nonplace Urban Field or Drome and began working as Flanger with Uwe Schmidt aka Atom™. As a result of annual travels to Australia and New Zealand The Nu Dub Players took shape in 1997. In the year 2000 Friedman founded his own record label, Nonplace, to ensure continuity for independent musical adventures like collaborations with Jaki Liebezeit (Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit) or The Nu Dub Players (Burnt Friedman & The Nu Dub Players). Besides, Friedman started a collaboration with David Sylvian and Steve Jansen.
