About this concert
Byrd Out presents Walthamstow Jazz Festival 2019, in association with Adnams, brings together legendary and cutting edge talent, with Cream drummer Ginger Baker headlining with his Jazz Confusion outfit, Afrobeat orginator Tony Allen, as well as the effortlessly cool Django Django, free jazz pioneer Evan Parker, Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier, Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, and rising stars such as Emma-Jean Thackray, Binker Golding, Project Karnak and others. The festival will take place on Saturday 16 February 2019 at the beautiful Grade II Listed Walthamstow Assembly Hall, a short walk from Walthamstow Central Station and is working in partnership with Dalston's Sodas, Perky Blenders Coffee Roasters, and Waltham Forest, London Borough of Culture 2019. Expect stellar jazz across both stages, as well as a chance to buy exclusive releases from our label friends including YAM Records, Weekertoft, Wormfood! London, Ecstatic Peace Library, None More Records, and us, Byrd Out. LINEUP Ginger Baker's Jazz Confusion “Gifted with immense talent, Ginger Baker combined jazz training with a powerful polyrhythmic style in the world’s first, and best, power trio - Cream.” [Rolling Stone Magazine] Tony Allen "Long-time Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen makes the complex sound effortless. Rarely has percussive innovation sounded this downright satisfying." [Pitchfork] Django Django (DJ set) “In the lineage of late-’60s, early-’70s pop weirdos, but they listen like modernist samplers and crate diggers” [Pitchfork]. Vels Trio “With influences ranging from Miles Davis to Thundercat, Vels Trio combine a wide palette of musical influences into an effortless, cohesive sound.” [Jazzwise Magazine] Evan Parker, John Edwards, and John Russell “If you have ever been tempted by free improvisation, Evan Parker is your gateway drug ... the greatest living exponent of free improvisation.” [Stewart Lee, The Guardian] Thurston Moore “The sound of a questing spirit pushing at the parameters of unlimited freedom.” [Clash Music] Binker Golding and Elliot Galvin “Binker Golding traverses the full range of his tenor saxophone, switching between parping basslines, midrange melodies and high-pitched freakouts. He often recalls Sonny Rollins playing in a pianoless trio” [The Guardian] “Elliot Galvin – contemporary jazz that moves between inviting lyricism and explosive edginess” [The Guardian] Emma-Jean Thackray “Trumpet player, multi-instrumentalist and producer Emma-Jean Thackray has been making waves this year.” [FACT Mag] Leifur James “when we had Leifur James in for a live set on Worldwide FM, it was instantly clear he was someone to keep an eye on. It wasn’t just his dexterity on multiple instruments (vocal chords included) and technologies, but his whole approach” [Stamp The Wax] Project Karnak “A blinder from the London scene” [Giles Peterson]. Lætitia Sadier “She provided the sanguine vocals for Stereolab, arguably one of the most profoundly influential — and deeply underrated — bands of the past 20 years” [Stereogum] PYJÆN “PYJAEN will be making an impact in 2019” [Supreme Standards] Cykada “Music that takes off – its fresh sound shows you the space beyond the conceptions of what is electronic, what is not, and what is jazz. This is where you meet Cykada, a 6-man space-shuttle bringing you to the outer space of music.” [Rhythm Passport] Run Logan Run “Run Logan Run is a head on collision of pounding tribal drums and screaming guttural saxophone. Using circular breathing and outboard FX, they create vast soundscapes that are both beautiful and brutal…” [Jazz  Fuel] Dulahli “far more focussed than their name would suggest” [Hifi Club] Têtes de Pois “A high energy, seven piece instrumental band based in Leeds, performing original music influenced by jazz, hip-hop, afro-beat and more” [Hot Vox] Snazzback “A modern jazz-funk fusion band with party energy to spare, great theatrics, musicianship and charisma. The expansive influences, especially behind the drumming here were quite marvellous, do seek them out.” [Vulture Hound] Waldo’s Gift “Waldo’s Gift are carving out new realms” [Clash Magazine] Dear Earth (DJ set) “Dear Earth shows off the kind of inventive, sample-rich approach that makes your ears prick up in an instant” [Juno] None More Records Soundsystem (DJ set) "The records in Sam and Harry’s DJ bags follow the same quality-is-everything ethos, meaning versatile, smiles for miles selections of slow-burning funk, psychedelic dancefloor soul and jazz" [Spiritland] Ashleigh Robinson (DJ set) “Having played alongside the likes of Gilles Peterson, Lonnie Liston Smith, Nicky Siano, Danny Kirvit, DJ Premier, Mala, J Daniel, Bradley Zero and Mr Bongo in recent years you can also catch him hosting a weekly show on Netil Radio.” [Ghost Notes] Earthly Measures (DJ set) Blick Trio Tommy Hare “Gentleman Rock ‘n’ Roller and Man About Town” [Sofar Sounds] ***Running order TBC.*** Early Bird @ £25; [Sold Out] First Wave @ £30; Second Wave @ £35; Concession (unwaged, retired, student) @ £25; Children 8-13 (must be accompanied by an adult) @ £5 Walthamstow Jazz Festival is presented as part of London Borough of Culture 2019.
