COLA Records and The Laughing Goat present the Deep Cuts Showcase hosted by Veronique Van Pelt, first Saturday’s 2019, continued July 6th with no. 7 razor eagle featuring Sarah Slaton, Emily Yates, Substitute Creature, and Donnie and Ross. Veronique, a songwriter with work on network television and three studio projects pending release in jazz, country, and art pop, hosts the series. Sarah Slaton is an out singer/songwriter that expresses pathos both poignant and relatable. An Arkansas native, Slaton taught herself to play guitar in the shadow of the Ozarks before making her way out West. Slaton fronted the Colorado trio, Edison, recognized for their tireless touring efforts. The band traveled over 150,000 miles between 2014-2018 and with a relentless DIY approach signed with Rhyme & Reason Records (pronoun, Red Baraat). Edison toured with Iron & Wine, Jared & The Mill, and opened for Nathaniel Rateliff, Walk The Moon, and Shakey Graves. The band saw national acclaim with their debut LP, Familiar Spirit, with positive reviews from Consequence of Sound and features on Daytrotter and Relix Sessions. Emily Yates is currently a national inspiration as a veteran, a survivor, and general overcomer with the guts to write her experience and keen observations into cheerful toe tapping ukulele songs. Yates’ voice delivers her alternately humorous and devastating lyrics unflinchingly, with the generous all embracing energy of a performer who has refined herself by fire and knows she has something vital to give the world. Substitute Creature is the latest manifestation of songwriter Collin O’Toole, comprised of inveterate performers of the Denver scene. Substitute Creature breaks hearts with each performance, keening with Jeff Buckley like grace through idiosyncratic entirely melting compositions on tastefully effected electric guitar. Don and Ross have a rare dedication to harmony. Two excellent voices move as one through insightful and tender lyrics over energetic and precise guitar. The effect has the potency of Simon and Garfunkel, Sublime, Kingston Trio, and Jason Mraz. Although this music has been refined through travels across the country, it’s new to Boulder and the DCS. The Deep Cuts Showcase will present the best songwriters of Colorado with sets that get to the marrow yet play off each other, with repeat invites to willing high caliber artists, to better hear the full story.
