About this concert
Carpenter is often referred to as the organ world's great rock star. He has taken the organ out of the church room by building a very own digital organ, which has been named the International Touring Organ (ITO). With this he has toured Australia, New Zealand, Russia, USA and Asia. - When Carpenter sits down at the organ one must be prepared for everything from Bach to music from Pirates of the Caribbean. Elva helps to make our city unique, and being able to use it also as a concert venue is something we really look forward to. That this will also be on the barge of Hope's Cathedral makes this extra fun, ”says Åshild van Nuys, cultural developer in Fredrikstad municipality. - It will be a spectacular experience on the pier in Fredrikstad with boats on all sides and completely unique organ music, adds project manager for The Tall Ships Races Fredrikstad Ingar Guttormsen. The concert is a collaboration between the Egil Hovland festival and the Cultural State in Fredrikstad municipality, with support from Borg diocese, Stene Stål Gjenvinning, Metallco Stene and Knif Trygghet Forsikring. The Cathedral of Hope is also a central partner for The Tall Ships Races. - This is Carpenter's first concert in Norway with the digital organ. Perhaps we will even hear something from our own great composer, Egil Hovland, ”says Emil Skartveit, festival manager for the Egil Hovland festival. The river scene will be located in front of the boat scene, so that the public can stand on the town side, walkway, or sit at one of the restaurants on the Brygge promenade. Big screens will also be set up so that you can experience Carpenter's exhilarating technique with both hands and feet. Friday, July 12 at. 22.00 on the river scene outside Båthuset Scene. The concert is 2x30 min. by 15 min. break. The concert is free and open to everyone.

Cameron Carpenter Biography

Cameron Carpenter – “the most controversial organist alive” (Dallas Morning News) – is “one of the rare musicians who changes the game of his instrument” (The Los Angeles Times) with performances that are “alternatingly dazzling and subtle, and always fired by a profound musical intelligence” (The Wall Street Journal).

Cameron challenges the ways in which the organist is promoted and the organ is played. His repertoire includes the complete organ works of Bach, Franck and Liszt, but he has adapted more than 200 works not for the organ: from the piano music of Liszt and Rachmaninoff to Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, to music from animé and film (Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and scores by John Williams and Bernard Herrmann), and re-imaginings of songs by Kate Bush, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and Annie Lennox. Bringing increased physicality to the organ as a former dancer, his supervirtuosic organ transcriptions of Chopin Études have led to comparisons as diverse as Vladimir Horowitz and Fred Astaire.

Cameron was a boy soprano who toured with the American Boychoir.
He holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees from The Juilliard School, from which he graduated in 2006.
