Matthew Moon

Matthew Moon began shaping the words and sounds of his new release, “I Am The Wind”, while living in the rural, mountain town of Cusco, Peru. He spent many of his days hiking through hills above his sister’s house- where the seeds of his fifth studio album began to blossom. It was here that Moon began composing on the Weissenborn lap steel guitar. Made popular by musical icons David Lindley, and Ben Harper, the Weissenborn sits on the lap and is played with a steel slide. It has a wide-open, penetrating sound, as evident in his new song, Rivers and Mountainsides. “I grew up listening to folk artists such as Paul Simon, and the way I play the lap steel is definitely a reflection of that.”

The new record has taken flight with musical contributions from an array of talent and international stars including: Tom Hagerman (Devotchka), Carl Carwell (Earth, Wind & Fire), Jeremy Lawton (Big Head Todd), Hazel Miller, Dave Preston (Matt Morris), Jai Vatuk (English Beat), Wally Ingram (Jackson Browne, Sheryl Crow), Claude Sim (Colorado Symphony Orchestra), and Phillip Stevens (Colorado Symphony Orchestra). In order to fund his new album, Moon orchestrated a successful Kickstarter campaign, raising close to $12,000.

You can also find Moon touring as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist with The Freddy Jones Band, playing instruments such as the mandolin, weissenborn lap steel, dobro, ukulele, and bouzouki. Additionally, he regularly tours with country music star, Chuck Wicks, singing hi-harmonies and playing all rhythm guitars (electric and acoustic).

Some History-

Moon's recent foray into music can be traced back to a meeting with renowned drummer and instrumentalist, Wally Ingram (Sheryl Crow, Jackson Browne, David Lindley). Wally sat in with Moon's band in the Spring of 2004, and later that summer, produced an EP for Moon at the House of Love in Laguna Niguel, California. Subsequently, Moon ended up moving to Los Angeles, and toured with Mr. Ingram and Parliament Funkadelic guitarist, Eric McFadden, as a solo support act for their 2005 release, Alektorophobia.

Later that spring, Moon landed a coveted spot at the Del Mar Music Festival alongside such luminaries and rising stars as Jason Mraz, Donovan Frankenreiter, Taj Majal, and Macy Gray. After seeing Moon’s set, Larry Richter (Eric Clapton, The Who, Van Morrison) called it, “One of the best performances I’ve seen,” and promptly signed Moon to a management deal. Soon, Moon would be recording with Grammy winning executive producer, Christopher Goldsmith (Ben Harper and the Blind Boys of Alabama), at Capitol Records in Hollywood, California, with a band consisting of drummer, Wally Ingram, keyboardist, Jason Yates (Ben Harper), guitarist, Chris Haugen, and bassist, Jai Vatuk (Common Sense, English Beat).

Shortly thereafter, Moon released his soon-to-be hit, “Don’t Change For Me.” The song, a catchy collaboration with Grammy-nominated artists Jesse Valenzuela (Gin Blossoms) and Danny Wilde (Rembrandts), was featured in the Budweiser 2008 Summer Olympics Promo on NBC and in the closing credits of the major motion picture, “Soccer Mom.” Additionally, the song was selected to be the lead-off track on the Gin Blossoms most recent album, “No Chocolate Cake” (2010). To top things off, Moon secured a car sponsorship with Hyundai Motors USA, toured with rock n’ roll legends, Peter Frampton, and The Doobie Brothers, and landed a slot on the Tempe Music Festival main stage, prior to pop superstar, Fergie.

Matthew Moon grew up in Colorado and later studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He currently resides in Nashville, TN.
