Cathedral Biography

There is more than one artist with this name.

1) Cathedral is a premier psychedelic stoner/doom metal band formed in late 1989, when founder members Lee Dorrian (ex-Napalm Death) and Mark "Griff" Griffiths were discussing their love of bands like Trouble, Pentagram, Black Sabbath, St. Vitus, Melvins, and Candlemass. The setting was at a Carcass show in Cardiff, where Griff was roadie and in charge off the projections of gore for that band. After more than several beers the pair came to the conclusion that they should form a band in the vein of their heroes and thus the idea was born. The band added stoner metal elements after their debut album in 1991, and have released their eighth full-length in late 2005.

2) Cathedral is an American 70s group, whose single album the Syn-phonic label rescued in 1991. This symphonic-style group is not to be confused with the neo-progressive group Cathedral on the Kinesis label (members of which went on to record the wonderful Ad Infinitum album) or the metal band Cathedral, which was an offshoot of Napalm Death. This Cathedral's sound is strongly reminiscent of Anglagard, with touches of Gentle Giant, King Crimson, and Yes.

3) Cathedral is also a spanish group of the 90's. It was founded by the ex-keyboardist of "Medina Azahara", Pablo Rabadán. The principal members are: Pablo Rabadán with the acoustic piano and the synthesizers, Manuel Varona at the vocal and electric guitar, Pablo Jiménez at the electric bass and Gérman Castro with the drums. They recorded only one disc of really good quality, its name is "Vendidos al Sol" (1996). The band plays a mixture of classic hard rock and a little of progressive and symphonic sound pure with Pablo's keyboards.

4) Cathedral was also a progressive rock band from Washington DC in the early 1990s, with the albums Kingdom of Ends, and There in the Shadows. Keyboardist Todd Braverman continued to explore progressive music with the band Ad Infinitum.
