Unlike most artists, Emme (pronouced "Em") didn't catch wind of her dream until the sails caught wind of her. Raised in a small town in the heart of Sonoma County, by a Portuguese and Irish father and Filipina, German, Spanish mother, Emme was taught that the only successes in life, stemmed from a classroom. "Call my parents old school." She says. "They didn’t believe dreams were actually tangible, or something you do for a living." Ironically enough, it was at school, where she would find her escape. In the middle of science class, Emme was talking about one of her favorite songs, "My Love is Your Love", by Whitney Houston. A fellow student couldn’t remember how it went, so Emme sang a few lines to help, assuming it was standard fare. But those who listened were shocked, and told her, "whoa! You sound just like the radio!" Emme started to realize there was something vastly different in her voice. More and more, she would sneak away, behind the classroom doors, behind the gym or on the blacktop to perform for her friends. One time, it caused such a scene, the school's administration rushed over to break up a fight. After clearing through the crowd, what they found instead was a little girl with a big voice. That same day, Emme was invited to sing at the school's music assembly later that month. While holding the microphone in her hands for this first time, she realized her calling. Her friends began requesting more songs and mini performances, but it wasn't until they had her upload a video online, where things began to take off. Emme was discovered on YouTube and began working on her first album in 2011. A fan of diverse artists as Lauryn Hill, Michael Jackson, Etta James, Stevie Wonder, and Amy Winehouse, Emme is a unique blend of toughness, elegance, soulfulness, and swagger. Capable of rapping with conviction, singing with soul, writing with heart, and making records with an ear for gritty intangibles, she blends the old and new, making records that breathe life, while nourishing mainstream pop radio.
