Ataraxia Biography

Ataraxia is a neo-classical/gothic band from Modena, Italy, that combines modern technology with archaic instrumentation over various media. They describe their music as a cross "between sacred and profane, ethereal and neoclassic, contemporary and early music." Their work has often involved research into European legends and Classical mythology. Contemplation, dreamy experiences, elegiac atmospheres, ritual movements float in a mysterious garden where contemporary textures of notes meet the embracing echo of classic sounds. Their lyrics are written in many ancient and contemporary languages (such as Latin, French, German, English, and their native Italian) as they try to bring to surface the hidden treasures and revelations from each one. Many of their performances take place in locations the band professes to possess specific spiritual qualities. Since the beginning of the group in the late 80's, they have recorded some 20 original LP's. Their album "Paris Spleen," released in December 2006 together with Madame Bistouri and CircuZ KumP, is based on cabaret macabre and surreal circus atmospheres. The latest LP, “Kremasta Nera,”, released in April 2007 draws archaic mantras and ritual movements, whispers magic spells and eastern litanies, and forges tribal rhythms and dark ceremonies inspired by the energy sites of Samothrace in Greece. They have released a poetic, photographic book together with the visual artist Livio Bedeschi and the music jourmalist Ferruccio Filippi tracing all their discography, philosophy and aesthetic perspective. This opus, with a CD included, is called "Arcana Eco".
