Margaret Airplaneman Biography

Stone and Star Bio

Stone and Star is the music of Margaret Garrett (Mr. Airplane Man), Gregg Porter (Bucco Nero, The Concerns, Bauchitherium) and Djim Reynolds (Bucco Nero).

In the spring of 2019, Margaret wanted to make a solo record of some songs to sell on the upcoming tour. She asked her friend Gregg Porter if he could help produce it because she was a big fan of his band The Concerns and knew he’d have good ideas about who to work with and how to approach things. She was correct in that…Gregg recommended bringing in his long time friend and musical collaborator, Djim Reynolds to engineer the day- long session.

They chose to set up at the Charles River Museum of Industry and innovation. The space has very high ceilings creating a lot of natural reverb so it’s a perfect spot for recording not too loud guitar and vocals. Plus it is filled with turn of the century antiques and clocks in the most magnificent way and happens to be just down the river from where Margaret lives. The Charles River that is…
The session went really well as the three connected right away over similar aesthetic and approach to music; keeping ‘feel’ and groove at the center of everything with an openness to spontaneous and cosmic ‘accidents’ and visitations. The record came out pretty cool and was released on Sympathy Records.

But that was just the beginning of the story…

After returning from a five week summer tour in Europe, Margaret asked Gregg and Djim to back her up on drums and bass respectively for a few local shows. It was a pretty magical collaboration from the get go. In the months that followed, they have played live on WMBR’s Pipeline, a handful of shows including the Union Pool holiday party (Brooklyn). They are finishing up recording an EP that should be out this upcoming spring. Followed by a midwest tour on the way to Milwaukee PsychFest.

Drawing a little from the dark rhythms of blues musicians like Howlin’ Wolf, Slim Harpo, Jessie Mae Hemphill but fused with hypnotic meoldies from Eastern Europe and beyond. It’s sometimes raw, sometimes sweet it is alternately stone in you and star.

“Stone & Star; heaven and earth magick, the weight and elation of love and existence.” Garrett Devoe (Pure Horsehair)

“Earth goddess grounded in the deep physicality of our world yet inspired by the cosmos and all the 4+ dimensional space swirling around us. Stone and Star. Indeed!”
