Join Iona Fyfe as she performs a new body of work featuring Appalachian folksongs and tunes, arranged and written by cellist Ellen Gira and mandolinist Callum Morton-Teng at the Star Folk Club, Glasgow on 23rd July in support of folk-song super group, Malinky.

Iona Fyfe

Aberdeenshire folksinger, Iona Fyfe, has become one of Scotland’s finest young ballad singers, rooted deeply in the singing traditions of the North East of Scotland. Winner of Scots Singer of the Year at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards 2018, Iona has been described as “one of the best Scotland has to offer.” (Global-Music.de) Released in 2019, Dark Turn of Mind is Iona’s first EP entirely in English and features six ballads and songs found in both Appalachia and Aberdeenshire and has been described as “a new interpretation to the country genre” – Maverick.

Ellen Gira

Ellen Gira is a seasoned cellist who has performed throughout the U.S. and the U.K., including at the Kennedy Centre in Washington, D.C. and at Cadogan Hall in London. Equally at home in both Scottish and Classical music, she has recorded and performed with traditional musicians such as 2016 US National Fiddle Champion Sean Heely, Manus McGuire, and Hanneke Cassel, and was featured as a soloist with the National Festival
Orchestra. She is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Scottish Music from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Cello Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Callum Morton-Teng
Callum Morton-Teng studied at the City of Edinburgh Music School and is currently is his final year of his bachelor’s degree in mandolin at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Winner of the 2016 BMG Solo Mandolin Competition and a founding member of acclaimed Western Classical and South-American tango fusion Duet “MK Duo”. Callum has performed in venues across Scotland.
Callum studied mandolin at East Tennessee State University through the Erasmus+ International Exchange programme, performing with Bluegrass bands in Nashville, Crossville, and Johnson City. Callum was also mandolinist in ETSU’s Celtic pride band, live-featured on Johnson City Radio WETS FM.
