About this concert
[ Ticket information and Concert time TBD ] Early Morning Rain: the songs of Gordon Lightfoot is a wander through the wonderfully crafted songs of one of Canada’s greatest songwriters, presented by a trio of musicians perfectly suited for the journey. John McLachlan has chosen over 25 songs from Lightfoot’s first ten, prolific years (1966 through 1976), and lovingly arranged in ways that make them familiar to anyone who followed his music, but also fresh for those who have never heard them before, or who are only familiar with his major hits. The concert unfolds with personal anecdotes and some historical context behind the songs as well as the role the music played in John McLachlan’s early musical development. The is no “tribute” show but rather a musical love letter with new arrangements to familiar classics. Feedback from audience members: “The concert was a kind of cultural alchemy from one time to another. Utterly transporting.” “After the concert I told you how much we enjoyed it. What I could not express until now is how wonderfully memorable the evening was. My wife and I have talked non stop of how much the evening has meant to us.” BC-born folk singer John McLachlan began writing and performing in folk clubs in Vancouver in 1979. Over the next 20 years he presented his original songs about his own experiences and historical events in hundreds of theatres, festivals, clubs, and schools in western Canada, and as far away as Colombia. After a hiatus working in arts administration and graphic design, in 2014 John returned to music, writing, and recording the albums Call it Home (2016), Wind and Bones (2017) and Time Broke (2018) with multi instrumentalist Marc Atkinson. In 2018 he recorded a 14-song album McLachlan Sings Lightfoot featuring gems from Lightfoot’s first ten, prolific years. johnmclachlan.ca Marc Atkinson (lead acoustic guitar/mandolin) is an accomplished musician who has toured extensively as the Marc Atkinson Trio in Canada and internationally for 20 years. He’s also a member of the group, The Bills, which is a highlight of summer festivals everywhere. marcatkinson.com Scott White (bass) is the third member of the trio who brings years of experience performing internationally and locally with The Bills and the Marc Atkinson Trio.

John McLachlan Biography

British Columbia born folk singer/songwriter John McLachlan’s original folk songs are hand-woven from his own roots, and the history and salty air of Canada’s west coast. Over the next 20 years he toured his original songs in many corners of British Columbia—from Nazko to Kyuquot, Fort St. John to Princeton, Prince George to Vancouver— presenting hundreds of performances as community concerts and programs for schools about Canadian history. He took a school show to Saskatchewan, played folk clubs across Canada and performed in Bogotá, Colombia.

John took a hiatus from touring and worked as a graphic designer, arts administrator (BC Touring Council, Creative City Network of Canada) and arts grant coordinator before returning to music in 2014. Since then he has recorded four albums of original songs, and is in the process of releasing multiple tribute albums of Gordon Lightfoot albums from the early 1970s.

He is touring again with his one-man multimedia show (“Call it Home”) as well as a duo and/or trio show (“Early Morning Rain: the songs of Gordon Lightfoot) with multi-instrumentalist Marc Atkinson and bassist Scott White).

John calls Hornby Island (K’òmoks Traditional Territory), home.
