Je suis né à Washington en 1960 et suis rentré à quatre ans avec ma famille en France où j'ai fait toute ma scolarité. Après quelques années de dur labeur j'ai à ma grande surprise réussi le concours d'entrée à l'Ecole Normale Supérieure, pour me rendre compte que je faisais fausse route.

Je suis donc parti à 22 ans à New York pour y apprendre le jazz que je jouais auparavant en piteux autodidacte. Là j'y ai trouvé mon bonheur. Tout d'abord étudiant à Brooklyn puis professionnel, j'y ai appris énormément de choses sur la musique, l'Amérique et la vie de musicien.

J'ai commencé à enregistrer des disques sous mon nom en 1987, et en produisis quatre à New York avec le même label aujourd'hui défunt, IDA Records, qui me conduisirent à obtenir le prix Django Reinhardt en 1993, date à laquelle j'étais revenu habiter à Paris où je réside depuis. En 1995, je publiai une biographie de Thelonious Monk et signai avec Sony, pour qui j'enregistrai, toujours à New York, deux disques dont le deuxième me valut les Victoires de la Musique en 1997.

Je commençai à tourner beaucoup avec mon trio (Europe, Etats-Unis, Asie, Australie) mais ça me démangeait d'aller un petit peu plus loin que le jazz acoustique.

Plus ouvert à ces nouvelles formes, le label Warner me proposa d'accueillir mes élucubrations et ce fut en 2000 Time 4 Change, un projet jazz et electro au Fender Rhodes avec qui nous sillonnâmes l'Europe pendant trois ans. Un autre album pour Warner avant que le département jazz ne ferme, et je poursuivis mes expériences électro avec Organics, un quartet très imprégné de drum’n'bass avec qui j'ai atteint mes records personnels de vitesse et de puissance instrumentale.

Un retour aux sources avec un trio acoustique (The Present, 2006) me permit de renouer avec mes amours d'antan et je m'habituai désormais à avancer dans les deux directions en même temps. Du coup, je lançai avec Otisto 23 et Nico Ticot un projet de trio piano-ordi –video avec lequel nous avons sorti deux albums, PC Pieces (2007, Nocturne) et FLY ! (2010, Gazebo), et je nous nous préparons à en enregistrer un troisième à paraître à l’automne 2014.

Réaffirmant mon besoin d’approfondir ma formation fétiche, le trio acoustique piano – contrebasse – batterie, j’ai enregistré en 2012 un album avec Ira Coleman et Clarence Penn intitulé Over the Clouds (Gazebo) qui fut très agréablement accueilli par la critique et m’a donné l’occasion de faire tourner ce trio un peu partout depuis bientôt deux ans.

Pendant le reste du temps, j'accompagne mes copains trompettistes (Eddie Henderson, Alex Tassel, Eric Le Lann), quelques acteurs, chanteuses et slammeurs (Jacques Gamblin, Diane Tell, Abd-Al-Malik) et nombre d'autres musiciens avec beaucoup de plaisir. J’ai également travaillé pour la télévisons , co-réalisant deux émissions pour Arte sur Thelonious Monk et Charlie Mingus ; j’ai également présenté et commenté le cérémonie exceptionnelle des dix ans des Victoires du Jazz en 2012. Enfin, réalisant un vieux rêve, je suis également en train d’écrire un livre sur les Inventeurs de Claviers au XXème siècle, à paraître chez Fayard en 2015.

I was born in Washington DC in 1960 and my family moved back to France when I was four. I was raised in Paris and after a few years of hard work I was admitted, to my great surprise, to the Ecole Normale Supérieure. It was at that time that I realized I was heading in the wrong direction.

So with a help of a music scholarship I moved to New York City when I was twenty-two to study jazz in a more formal way than my self-taught approach. I found happiness in the Big Apple, first as a student then as a young professional, where I learnt a lot about Music, America and the joys and pains of a young jazz musician.

I started recording albums in New York under my own name in 1987 and produced four of them for IDA Records, the last of them earning me the Django Reinhardt Prize in 1993, shortly after I moved back to Paris. In 1995, I published for Gallimard Editions a biography of Thelonious Monk and signed a two records deal with Sony Jazz, with which I was awarded the 1997 Victoires de la Musique.

That lead to a lot of touring with my trio (Europe, US, Asia, Australia) but I was itching for something a little more contemporary than acoustic jazz. More open to these new shapes of music, Warner Jazz offered to host my wild chases, and in 2000 I recorded Time For Change, a Jazz/Electro project with which we toured Europe extensively for three years, until Warner closed its Jazz department, a year after my second album for them, Stories. I then pursued my electronic experiments with a quartet strongly influenced by drum n’bass called Organics, with whom I think I reached the my personal record of loudness and velocity.

Meanwhile, I was gradually missing the good old trio sound, so in 2006 I recorded The Present with an acoustic band. Since that album, I started to get accustomed to work in both directions at the same time and with my friend Otisto 23, soon joined by VJ Nico Ticot, we quickly released a piano-computer- video album, PC Pieces, which was followed by FLY ! A third volume of that electronic project is expected in the Fall of 2014.

Reuniting with an old friend from my New York years, bassist Ira Coleman, I recorded in 2012 for my Gazebo label with Clarence Penn on drums a new trio album, Over the Clouds, strongly influenced by Electro, African Music and Jazz, which was very favorably welcomed by both critics and public and has lead the trio on the road of many venues and festivals for the past two years.

I spend the rest of my time playing with my trumpeter friends (Eddie Henderson, Eric Le Lann, Alex Tassel), singers actors and slammers (Diane Tell, Jacques Gamblin, And Al Malik) and much more musicians, which I truly enjoy. I also worked for television, co-directing two documentaries for Arte on Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus, as well as hosting the 2012 Tenth Year Anniversary of the Victoires du Jazz. As for writing, I’m presently fulfilling an old dream : writing a book on Keyboard Inventors of the Twentieth Century, which should come out in 2015.
