Cody Vavrik Biography
With Cody Vavrik, what you see is what you get. It’s hard to put him into a category because he represents so many.
He knew from a young age that being dynamic meant being just a little bit happier. He grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, in a town that glorified “fitting in” more than it did standing out. What he quickly learned was that honesty and vulnerability felt much more powerful than ‘being the best’. He was more comfortable being inclusive. He had a feeling, even then, that so much was going unsaid about the way that people treat each other, and more so, themselves. These ‘boxes’ we were creating were stopping us from living our lives more fully, more expressively.
Cody began making music at age 15. It was the platform for expressing his perspective, and for simply expressing an energy that had been brewing in him all of his life. He decided to give into the power of creativity. He fell into pop music because, well, it made him happiest.
“It isn’t the idea of fame or glamor that I want, it is the idea that music can help me speak. In a world that shuts people up just for being different, I want to break down the barriers that have put so many people in a place of closed-mindedness.” Cody says. “Staying true to your creativity isn’t just beneficial, it’s everything.” Cody uses music as an outlet, a way to express himself as a creative and free thinker. He pours more emotion into his work than anything else, allowing himself to be fully exposed in his music. His sense of friendship, acceptance and adventure find their way into his lyrics and his sound. He strives to be transparent and honest with his audience, and remains dedicated to music. Above all, he will not tell ‘lies’ to his fans and he will not ‘sell-out.’
“Selling out for me would be allowing the ideas of “normal” or conventional to take over. It would be losing control of my own creativity. It would be me, losing touch with the voice of my own direction.” Cody says. By living true to his creative spirit, Cody can be a complex, versatile and full-of-life person, as well as a powerful musician. He has made it his mission in music, not just to stay true to his own creativity, but to do so in a way that makes us all stop to think.
Standing out has never been hard for Cody.
“What gives me the confidence to be able to make pop music without boundaries is the fact that I feel like I’m the only male “pop artist” that comes up with this shit these days. Rockstars have the complete freedom to express themselves and so do I” He is a person who enjoys costume, exploration and expression—fitting into 100 categories, but at the same time, none. “I am not a confident person,” Cody says, “We can all be shy, unsure and even insecure—but that is what makes us human. Being human is what makes us beautiful.” Cody speaks out against labels, more so the ones that we put on ourselves.
Cody’s drive and devotion is brought forward in everything he does. Working with a well-known Chicago producer, Vince Lawrence, Cody started recording original music at age 15. He was quickly linked to pop producer Simon Perry out of New York. Continually releasing music, Cody has opened up for chart-topping artists from The Wanted to Karmin to Icona Pop and Bonnie McKee. With the upcoming release of his EP Northside Cody continues to execute his intuitive artistic abilities. “I am an open book in a lot of ways, but I am a long way from the final chapter.”
