Joseph (Joey) Speranzo is a graduate of Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, VA, where he earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with a Performance Certificate in Classical Saxophone. He received a Pre-K-12 Professional License from the Virginia Department of Education with an Instrumental Endorsement.
While at Shenandoah, Joey performed the highest caliber of music in the Conservatory's premier ensemble, the Shenandoah Conservatory Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Damon Talley and Dr. Timothy Robblee. Under their batons, he worked with renowned composers such as John Corigliano, David Lang, David Maslanka, Kevin Puts, Carter Pann, and Jonathan Newman.
As a part of the saxophone studio and a student of Dr. Timothy Roberts (Principal, US Navy Band, Ret.), Joey was a member of the Shenandoah Conservatory Saxophone Quartet and Saxophone Ensemble. He worked with guest artists Claude Delangle, Lars Mlekusch, Mariano Garcia Jimenez, Clifford Leaman, Raaf Hekkema, and the Elipsos Quartet and composers Eric Whitacre and David T. Little. The quartet was also a part of the consortium for Matthew Quayle's Connect.
Following the completion of his undergraduate degree, Joey immediately began working towards a Masters of Music in Instrumental Performance at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, where he is currently enrolled. He studies with Dale Underwood (Principal, US Navy Band, Ret.) and performs with the Frost Wind Ensemble led by Dr. Robert Carnochan, the Frost Saxophone Ensemble, and the Frost Saxophone Quartet. Since being in Miami, Joey has worked with notable saxophonists Arno Bornkamp and Katherine Weintraub and composer James Syler.
This coming summer, Joey will be presenting at the World Saxophone Congress in Zagreb, Croatia and premiering a work for soprano saxophone and electronics by David Pegel.
