Singers Jo Lawry, Kate McGarry and Luciana Souza join a top-notch rhythm section for a performance of Joni Mitchell's Mingus, her 1979 recording with the legendary bassist Charles Mingus. Triple GRAMMY-winning drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and musicians perform Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue, Carrington's exciting take on Mingus' 1962 classic collaboration with Duke Ellington and Max Roach. Jazz Vinyl Revisited gives audiences a rare opportunity to hear groundbreaking jazz recordings of the past, reinterpreted and performed live by outstanding contemporary jazz artists.

Luciana Souza Biography

Luciana Souza is a Brazilian jazz singer and composer.

Daughter of poet Tereza Souza and singer-composer-guitarist Walter Santos, she grew up in São Paulo. She began her career by recording jingles for commercials. She has also worked in the field of European classical music, working with the Bach Akademie in Stuttgart, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, composer Osvaldo Golijov, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. She is a graduate of Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory.

She has been nominated three times for a Grammy Award as best jazz vocalist in 2002, 2003 and 2005. A respected composer and performer, she has appeared and recorded with renowned jazz musicians and composers of new music, including Danilo Perez, Hermeto Pascoal, Maria Schneider, Kenny Werner, John Patitucci, and Osvaldo Golijov. Ms. Souza has been crossing over into classical music. She is a soloist on two very successful pieces by contemporary classical composer Golijov, and has performed with the Bach Akademie in Stuttgart, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and both the Los Angeles and Brooklyn Philharmonic orchestras.

She currently teaches at the Manhattan School of Music.
