Nalani Proctor Biography
Nalani Proctor is a solo songwriter based in Iowa. Growing up in the small towns of Keokuk, IA, and Kahului, HI shaped her love of music, and sharing stories, but also pulled her in opposing directions of belonging, never quite fitting in as Hapa Hawaiian. Now, she's carving her own way, pulling from her personal experiences, her love of acoustic World music, underground punk and rock, folk tales she loves to retell, drawing themes from nature, painting, crafting, and sneaking in the few Hawaiian words she knows. She sings deceivingly simple melodies over sometimes clunky guitar playing.
Her most recent full length album release, “Nothing", is a labor of love, with the past 5 years writing songs to celebrate poignant milestones and defuse devastating heartbreaks. "Proctor’s music turns composition into a weapon, sharpening each song to a distinctive point that cuts right to the heart of the matter," writes SFOP Music. Nalani evokes the emotions of the lyrics, often layering her own voice and guitar to create upbeat surf rock sounds or unbearably sad and languid characters against sparse instrumentation. Daily Gate City’s G. Franklin boasted “‘Nothing’ is actually EVERYTHING.”
