Coco Peila Biography

Coco Peila Full Bio
Coco Peila is a Bay Area-based MC, Singer-Songwriter, and RAPgoddess.
Her unique brand of Hip Hop, Soul, and Experimental music is a headnodic
call-to-action for racial and gender justice. Her first music video, “Any Day
Now,” was released in 2007, and was commissioned for Youth Noise's
"Healthy Body Image" campaign, and featured in the International Museum Of
Women. With “Misses Shoot ʻem Down” the lead single and accompanying
video from her I Still Love H.I.M. EP," she offered women everywhere the rare
combination of empowering content and industry-quality, catchy, danceable
music. Shortly after releasing Part 2 of I Still Love Him in 2014, she joined The
Pharcyde and Slum Village on their national "Welcome to Dillaville" tour. She
released Lady Day Said, the finale of the I Still Love Him trilogy, in 2015. In
February 2016, she released “Handle My Business” (featuring Naysan), a
sophisticated Hip-Hop and R&B club record which navigates romantic
relationships and celibacy in the 21st century. Coco has performed
internationally at El Rey Theatre (Los Angeles), The New Parish (Oakland),
The San Francisco Opera House, The Beehive (Boston), The Experience
Music Project (Seattle), Teatro Nacional de Guatemala, and New Zealandʼs
Hope Bros, sharing stages with renowned artists including Dead Prez, Talib
Kweli, Zion I, J.Rocc, and many others. In addition to her innate creative
sensibility, Coco built a solid foundation in recording arts, and music
composition, theory and production while studying at Fullsail University in
Florida. As a student, she produced The RealNeRds Mixtape Series, which
shed the spotlight on up-and-coming indie artists from across the U.S, the
Caribbean, and New Zealand, whose music encouraged exploration of
intelligence and critical thinking.
Among the most memorable moments in Coco's career was being selected to
perform for President Obama during his first visit to Oakland. Her music has
been featured widely on major platforms, from KMEL to the Museum of
African Diaspora. Coco has been named in the East Bay Express' "Best Local
Hip Hop" list and by Hip Hop historian Davey D as a "Hip Hop Artist to Watch."
She currently teaches at The Mindful Life Project, a nationally renowned
Mindfulness & Hip Hop organization, featured on the Katie Couric show, which
serves elementary & middle schools in Richmond and Oakland California. The
“RAPgoddess” is back in the studio, co-producing her next project “20Sum &
Celibate” (set to drop this Summer) with international producer Mic “Raka”
Angelo
