Kim Jordan Biography

Kim, an extraordinarily gifted artist, keyboardist, producer, arranger, vocal coach, and engineer, received her BA in music from Howard University. Upon graduation, Kim was immediately hired and became musical director for jazz legend and poet Gil Scott Heron touring off and on for over 30 years until his recent demise. She received international acclaim for her live performances from such publications as The London Guardian, The San Francisco Examiner, The Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post, Vibe and Billboard Magazines. Kim has over 30 years in the music industry and is a trailblazer for the musical genre “Gospel Jazz.” As the first signed artist with the Washington D.C.-based record company, ProSounity Music Entertainment Label, she has released two previous CD projects, All For You, and Full Circle. Kim’s phenomenal career to date includes her work on Broadway with Taj Mahal in the Zora Neale Hurston’s production, “MULE BONE,” where she assisted in the recording of the “MULE BONE” sound track and accompanied him on several shows including a White House performance saluting National Public Radio. She has performed with such notable artist as Roberta Flack, Stevie Wonder, Brenda Russell, Teri Lynn Carrington, Regina Carter, Common, Noel Pointer, Dave Valentine, Lonnie Liston Smith, Vanessa Williams and Meshell Ndegeocello. Her Gospel Jazz collaborations include performances at the “Jackie Robinson Jazz Festival; NYC Seaport Jazz Concert Series; The Congressional Black Caucus’ Salute to Women in Jazz; The Women in Jazz Series’ Kennedy Center/D/C; The Black Academy of Arts and Letters, Inc’ Theatre in Dallas, TX; The Detroit Opera House; Syracuse Jazz Festival and at the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Dianne Reeves, Kevin Eubanks, Gerry Gonzales Billy Childs and numerous others have performed her musical compositions. She scored the music for the Showtime cable network Young Black Film Maker’s Movie “Rain.” She has served as a music conductor for the award winning Washington Performing Art’s Society’s Children of the Gospel Ensemble. She has been musical director, composer, producer, arranger and/or vocal coach for a number of award-winning recording artist and labels, including Gil Scott Heron on XL Records, Pure Soul and Mya on Interscope Records, Dru Hill on Island Black Music, Terri Dexter on Warner Brothers Records just to name a few. Kim, a former music teacher for the Washington, D.C. public school system has received numerous awards including the prestigious ASCAP Music Award for composing and producing a top ten song on Billboard’s charts, “We Must Be In Love,” recorded by the group Pure Soul, as well as the Urban Gospel Alliance and Urban Gospel Industry Awards for Female Artist and Producer of the year in the gospel-jazz category. On September 30, 2001, Kim was ordained as a Minster of the Gospel at Crossover Church in Hyattsville, MD, where she serves as Minister of Arts and Community Worship. In December of 2008, Kim received her Master of Arts in Practical Theology from Regent University and is pursuing a Doctorial Degree fusing Theology and Gospel Jazz. Currently, Kim has released her latest project entitled “Uncommon.” She continues to serve as the National Music Director for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and still performs with her band “Uncommon.” She remains a much sought after Artist, Producer, Musician, Arranger, Director, Vocal Coach, Preacher, Teacher and Facilitator for Churches, Record Labels, Artist, Choirs, Conferences, Seminars and Workshops.
