Dubious Distinction

From the upper elevations of both life and music Southern California’s Inland Empire, Dubious Distinction is emerging as an energetic and vibrant three-piece band that delivers an eclectic blend of artistry and musicianship. Using a mixture of melodies, accented by their creative and intuitive blend of genres, lends their music a variety of original songs built around both roots and progressive reggae music. Emerging from the San Bernardino Mountains, front man and lead songwriter Michael Acuña wanted to create a different take on modern reggae. In April 2014, Mike and co-Founder Bob England, bassist, were introduced by longtime friend Don Jones, and shortly thereafter the pair immediately began writing their mesmeric combination of rhythm and melody. Within their first year of playing together, Dubious Distinction were already playing shows out of state, at local market nights, casinos, and being featured on internet radio. While their music continued to evolve, so did their motivation to promote this developing project. From their debut as a trio, they connected with a community of enthusiastic listeners that began to discover them more by word of mouth and local showcases. As the band progressed, so did the lives of its members. Shortly after their first year, Don had to step down and the group added long time friend Derek Golden on drums until late 2017 when the group changed their line up to current drummer, David Lopez. Currently the band plays several shows a month around the Inland Empire. While this talented group of musicians are relatively new to the vibrant local music scene, they have been steadily growing in popularity while playing band showcases at concert venues. Their fans, affectionately know as the “Dub Nation,” compare them to such groups as Pepper, 311, and Iration, and consequently, these bands are some of their influences. Dubious Distinction has been achieving more notoriety among new fans and other local reggae bands. As they continue to distinctively develop their songwriting abilities, the band aspires to become a major player to the scene at a time when modern reggae is gaining new levels of popularity with people of all ages.
