Metavari Biography

"Dark beauty. Doomed romance." —XLR8R
"The Christ child." —Tiny Mix Tapes
"Searing cascade of meticulously controlled choas." —Vehlinggo
"Drown out the world" —NPR Music

The evolution of Metavari's work in electronic music has defined the career of American composer Nathaniel David Utesch. The musician and Grammy nominated art director (Smashing Pumpkins, Phoebe Bridgers, Weezer, Korn, Underoath, etc.) has led the act across the edges of the genre for over a decade. Metavari is best known for its career defining Record Store Day titles on the famed Belgian label, One Way Static Records; the synth-heavy reimagining of Fritz Lang’s 'Metropolis,' and 'ABSURDA,' the pioneering collection of dark and phosphorus music for the short films of David Lynch. 2022 saw the collaboration between Metavari and percussionist Colin Boyd, and the project's fifth studio album; ‘Soft Continuum.’

‘Soft Continuum’ is a kaleidoscope of contemporary electronics fractured by kosmische and new age music. The record began as both a tribute to and a movement with founding member, Ty Brinneman, who was diagnosed with mesothelioma at the end of 2018. Early sessions included every member who has ever been involved in the project. After Ty’s heartbreaking passing in 2020, his final recordings were expanded to a full-length record with bonus tracks; now dedicated to his life and memory. The writing is not without the nuances of Nathaniel's production but 'Soft Continuum' pushes further the boundaries of the art. Brittle MIDI and material sound become a rhythmic spinal column for a work wrapped in notes from new age electronica and dark cinematic influences.

Metavari has seen seven collaborators and played over 400 shows in the US and Canada since in its nine years of live performance. Metavari records have been released worldwide through Joyful Noise Recordings, Light in the Attic Records, Mondo, and Deathwish, Inc.
