Hunter Adams Biography
I don't remember a time when music was not crucial to me. I don't mean that in the sense of doing it for a living - that came later - but I mean it more like breathing, or having a heartbeat. I was always confounded when people would say things like 'I'm glad you're giving it a shot' - like it's an arrow you shoot only once and, if you miss, you have to decide how else to busy yourself for the rest of your life. It was never like that for me. Like my heart, it wasn't something I chose, it's a vital organ that enables me to exist.
As a kid I would wax poetic. I loved writing. Not just poetry: stories, prose - anything that enabled me to build worlds and escape from my own. Somewhere around the age of ten, I started to play the guitar, I don't even remember why. Once I realized I could merge my writing with music, it was like finding two parts to a whole. At around thirteen I taught myself to sing, so I could have another tool to build with. Ever since then music has been my information processor for the world around me. I can tell stories, I can hurt, I can laugh, I can love adequately through music. I can take the chaos of my life, and give it some sense, some meaning, some purpose.
In 2012 I went to New Orleans to work with John Porter (Cat Empire, BB King, Missy Higgins), came back and toured Australia with wonderful artists like Steve Balbi and Damien Leith. After that I took some down time for a few years, to figure some things out. I got lost in the mountains, took up surfing, lost myself, fell in love... I hibernated in a studio for months and made an EP called 'Chrysalis', which is out now. Inside of it, you'll hear my heart and soul. You'll hear everything I've experienced over the past few years, you'll hear every moment of what has mattered to me. It is a project that I have produced and overseen from start-to-finish, and for the first time in my life I feel like I have been able to create an almost perfect representation of the person I am at this point in time.
I will say that one great thing I have learned from love, is how to be without it. That is what this record is about.
This is the story so far. Go grab that EP.
