Hélder Bruno Biography

HELDER BRUNO, composer, pianist, musicologist.
His love for music has led him to a diverse career path, having immersed himself in academic research, authoring a book, and serving as a local councillor for culture, education, youth and tourism. During the same time he never stopped composing and performing.
He captivates us with both his music and his words. You get touched by every word, by every note.

HÉLDER BRUNO was born on the 15th of december 1976 in the city of Coimbra, Portugal.
“I always felt a strong connection with music. I can’t remember myself without music.

It has always been this way and it always will be...”

HÉLDER BRUNO started playing the piano at the age of 9.

At 11 years old he started studying at the Music Conservatory of Coimbra where he completed "Music Theory & Analysis".

He was a member of the choir and "Big Band" of the Music Conservatory.

Because of his growing fascination of Jazz music he started to study at the Jazz School of Oporto where he joined the Dixieland Orchestra.

Hélder Bruno attended workshops and master classes thaught by Portuguese jazz musicians like Carlos Martins, Carlos Barreto, Bernardo Moreira, Pedro Moreira, João Paulo Esteves da Silva and Bernardo Sassetti.

He attended Jazz Improvisation courses at the Jazz School of the "Hot Clube de Portugal".

In 1999 he got his degree in Musical Education at College of Education (ESEC) in Coimbra.

In 2001 he started working as an assistant professor at the College of Education of Coimbra.

From 2001 untill 2005 Hélder Bruno started research at the University of Coimbra where he earned his master's degree in Musicology at the Faculty of Arts with his thesis on the phenomenon of jazz in Portugal during the fascist dictatorship.

In 2006 he published his first book "Jazz em Portugal (1920 – 1956)" (Almedina, 2006).

Also in 2006 he started his PhD studies at the University of Aveiro where he integrated the "Ethnomusicology Institute - The Music and Dance Center of Studies" and the "Jazz Studies Center" as a researcher.

While persuing his scientific and academic career he continued his artistic one.

He worked with: Vonavemor, Né Ladeiras, Jorge Palma, Maré Alta, Cool Train Trio, Nuno Guerreiro, Baladas Bailadas, Inês Santos.

He composes a wide range of music styles.

At the moment, HÉLDER BRUNO is focused on his contemporary classical music project “A Presença, serena e terna”.



HÉLDER BRUNO nasceu a 15 de dezembro de 1976, na cidade de Coimbra, Portugal.

“Sempre senti uma profunda ligação com Música. Não me lembro de mim sem Música. Sempre foi assim e sempre será…”

HÉLDER BRUNO iniciou os estudos de piano aos 9 anos de idade. Aos 11, ingressa no Conservatório de Música de Coimbra onde concluiu o curso complementar de Formação Musical. No Conservatório integrou o Coro e a Orquestra Ligeira.

Devido ao seu fascínio pela música Jazz optou por estudar piano na Escola de Jazz do Porto, onde integrou a Dixieland Jazz Band.

Hélder Bruno frequentou vários workshops e master classes ministrados por nomes de referência do Jazz português, tais como: Carlos Martins, Carlos Barreto, Bernardo Moreira, Pedro Moreira, João Paulo Esteves da Silva and Bernardo Sassetti.

Frequentou também alguns cursos de Jazz e Improvisação ministrados pela Escola de Jazz do Hot Cube de Portugal.

Em 1999, licenciou-se em Educação Musical na Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico de Coimbra (ESE/IPC) e em 2001 foi professor assistente nesta instituição.

Entre2001 e 2005 iniciou a sua atividade enquanto investigador e mestrando em Ciências Musicais na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra, onde obtém o grau de Mestre em Ciências Musicais com uma tese sobre o fenómeno do Jazz em Portugal durante a ditadura do Estado Novo.

Em 2006, publica o seu primeiro livro, "Jazz em Portugal (1920 – 1956)" (Almedina, 2006). Neste mesmo ano iniciou o doutoramento na Universidade de Aveiro, onde integrou o Instituto de Etnomusicologia – centro de estudos em música e dança (INETmd) e o Centro de Estudos de Jazz.

Apesar de ter seguido carreira científica e académica nunca deixou de compor. Trabalhou com projetos e nomes como Vonavêmor, Né Ladeiras, Jorge Palma, Maré Alta, Cool Train Trio, Nuno Guerreiro, Baladas Bailadas, Inês Santos.

Neste momento, HÉLDER BRUNO está focado no seu projeto “A Presença, serena e terna”.
