Ray's Jazz welcomes Russian born saxophonist Zhenya Strigalev for a mix of jazz and blues including tunes from his new album Blues For Maggie.\nBorn in St Petersburg, Zhenya Strigalev took up the saxophone as a teenager. After winning local awards for his ability he was granted a scholarship to attend London’s Royal Academy of Music in recognition of his outstanding musical talent. \nSince graduating, Zhenya has cut a dynamic path between the London and New York jazz scenes, working with some of the most forward thinking musicians on the contemporary jazz circut from Eric Harland to Ambrose Akinmusire; Tim Lefebvre of David Bowie's band to Alex Sipiagin; William Parker, Aaron Parks, Larry Grenadier and Nasheet Waites.\nThe line up includes: Zhenya Strigalev, saxophone; Ferg Ireland, double bass and Jon Scott drums.\nFor a full list of upcoming Ray's Jazz events, visit the Ray's Jazz Events page.\n Tickets: £5 standard.\nVenue: Level 6, Foyles 107 Charing Cross Road\nDoors at 6.00pm, performance from 6.30pm.

Zhenya Strigalev Biography

Since graduating from London’s prestigious Royal Academy of Music, Zhenya has cut a dynamic path between the London and New York jazz scenes. He’s worked with some of today’s most forward thinking musicians including Eric Harland, Ambrose Akinmusire, Tim Lefebvre, Chris "Daddy" Dave, Alex Sipiagin, William Parker, Aaron Parks, Joseph "Foley" McCreary from Miles Davis fame, Larry Grenadier. Zhenya has appeared at many prestigious jazz festivals and concert venues, performing extensively in Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Russia, Czech Republic, Austria, Britain, Switzerland, Chile, Argentina, Peru. He has recorded 4 albums with his groups - Smiling Organizm and Never Group. His music in regular rotation on BBC radio as well as national radio stations in Austria, Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Australia and France.

Zheny enjoys the challenge of shedding some light on the undiscovered and describes the desired on-the-edge thrill that unfolds: “The whole point of what I do is to surprise myself".
