WINACHI Biography

WINACHI are a rare gem glistening in the peripheral sight of the music industry. Experimenting like Dr Funkkenstein on acid with a multitude of styles, they throw electro, rock, soul, hip hop, indie and dance together to create a Molotov cocktail of infectious, funk drenched anthems.

Winachi are entering a new era in their compelling history, journeying from the modest streets of North West England, to the glitz and glamour of the Hollywood Hills, which has become a second home such is their popularity across the Atlantic. Their story, since their formation in 2015, is a complex and intriguing tale that has been self-described as ‘The Great Funk N' Roll Swindle’.

Winachi have never been a group to follow any fads or wanting to be pigeonholed to a specific scene, which makes them a unique entity. Instead, co.founders Liam Croker and Antony Egerton approached the industry in an unorthodox manner. Rather than embarking on the excessive gigging circuit in order to be noticed, they created a hit list of people they wanted to work with, and through sheer guts, ballsiness, and flair, they successfully ticked off a lot in a relatively short space of time. The cast list of who they have worked with when producing videos for their songs is impressive, including Keith Allen (Transporting, Shallow Grave) in the poptastic 'Time For Love' and Tommy Flanagan (Sons Of Anarchy, Peaky Blinders) in the psychedelic funkadelica of ‘A Room With A Zoo'. The array of track collaborations includes the likes of legendary record producers Howie B (Tricky, Bjork), Danny Saber (Black Grape, The Charlatans) & John X (David Bowie, Rolling Stones) and artists such as Scorpio (Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five), Alabama 3, I Kong, Kermit (Black Grape) and Rowetta (Happy Mondays).

Winachi are an eclectic enigma!!! Since their inception, they have evolved from China White, to Winachi Tribe, to simply WINCACHI. The charismatic five-piece are led by original pioneers Liam Croker (Vocals & Lyrics) and Antony Egerton (Keys & Programming), and are joined by Mike Bee (Guitar), Richard Ritchie (Bass), and inventive / legendary percussionist Inder Goldfinger from Ian Brown fame. The diverse nature of this group of talented musicians heavily contributes to the refreshing and exciting musical crossovers heard in each unique track.

The vibe of Winachi is cool and crazy, with a swaggering Mancunian tenacity mixed with smooth Californian G Funk soul. Songs are influenced by life, the people around them, family, friends, enemies, drugs, love, sex, the government, mental health….and even Tommy Cooper, but positive messages are always portrayed, even against the darker themes. Musically, they take the best of artists like Massive Attack, Tricky, George Clinton, Sly Stone, Melle Mel, Primal Scream, and Happy Mondays, and mould it into their own hybrid of funk induced bombs.

Live Winachi shows are nothing short of mesmeric. Fans shake and groove to every rousing beat and seductive riff the band conjures up, creating the sort of atmosphere fit for festivals when hitting their peak. This isn’t any standard show they perform…this is funk opera! So, it’s of no surprise they’ve headlined their own tours of the U.K, Europe and USA.

Winachi have also toured in an official supporting capacity to The Charlatans (Los Angeles), Happy Mondays, The Sugarhill Gang & The Furious Five. In addition, they have attained worldwide airplay and press in publications such as L.A Times, L.A Record, Manchester Evening News, KCRW, Billboard China, BBC 6 Music and many more.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding 2020, Winachi still managed to win awards in the US, picking up two gongs at the prestigious ‘2020 ISSA Awards’ in Atlanta for ‘Best International Band’ and 'Best International Video' for uplifting single 'Funky But Chic'.

2021 will see the release of Winachi’s long awaited and much anticipated debut album. This was recorded and produced over a three-year period between their own HQ studio in Warrington, England, and in Los Angeles, USA with producer John X at the world-famous studio, Earthstar Creation Center, on Venice Beach. The album features backing vocals from L.A vocalist Natalie Wilde (famed for working with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds) and a collaboration with long-time friend, Rowetta. The final mixing and additional production are being taken care of in London by award winning mix engineer Joe Hirst (Ian Brown, Bloc Party), who is one of the UK’s elite when it comes to mixing.

Before the album’s release, Winachi will tease us with a collaborative remix E.P featuring a number of exciting international artists and producers such as I Kong, Howie B, Paolo Baldini, Jim Spencer, and young upcoming dub / electronica London producer, Impey.

With years of blood, sweat and tears going into honing their craft, Winachi have the tunes, experience and support around them to make 2021 a key year to write a new chapter in their illustrious tale.

“I chose to manage the band after building a relationship with the band members over the last few years. I loved and love their attention to detail. Their soul and funk expression. Ultimately their fuck off this is us like it or lump it attitude!” Howie B (U2, Bjork, Tricky)

“...the most exciting, edgy band I've worked with since Black Grape. Destined to be huge!!!” Danny Saber (Rolling Stones, Black Grape, Charlatans)

“The Winachis are a 12-legged groove machine that are guaranteed to deliver nonstop unmitigated funk.” John X (David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, Michael Hutchence)

“These lads are the best out there, pure uncut raw talent. I can promise you that they will astonish us all!!!” The Very Reverend D.Wayne Love (Alabama 3)
