Monoculture Biography

Monoculture is a Dallas-originated, Chicago-based, psych/jazz-fusion group. What once started as aimless jams between founders and longtime friends Olan Mijana and Nick Leibold became something with a little more purpose when the two completed a four-track demo while living 300 miles apart. This demo was the catalyst to the two's completion of Monoculture’s full-length, debut album “Heavier Daze,” an eclectic take on psychedelic rock.

Over the course of the next few years, Monoculture held opening slots for psych legends The Brian Jonestown Massacre and other national acts such as Mild High Club, and L.A. WITCH. In the process, they received nods from Afropunk and built a solid home base in their hometown of Dallas by founding the city’s first psychedelic music festival, Paisley Maze, earning the Dallas Observer’s acclaim as the city’s Best Rock Act of 2018, and receiving mentions from other local publications such as D Magazine and Central Track. And while their first record left the impression that there was still some soul searching for them to do, their second, titled Blueprint for Dysfunction, which was punctuated by Jason Trevino on bass and John Valentine on keys, sees Monoculture truly finding their form with something more cohesive, conceptual, and unique. Following the release of their second album, Monoculture announced their relocation to Chicago.
