The Black Catapult

One of Brisbane’s most exciting and much-loved punk rock bands, The Black Catapult, are ramping things up in 2019 with a brand new single, ‘We Were Young’, which draws on the band’s own youth, dropping in early June and a sophomore album, ‘Jackson Street’, due for release later in the year.
Established in 1994, after bonding over a shared love of music and skating, the band played under a few names before settling on The Black Catapult, while staying true to their beloved genre of music since the beginning. With a larger-than-life stage presence and a level of genuine, audience interaction that’s rarely seen, the band has shared the stage with international acts such as Unwritten Law and Reel Big Fish, along with Aussie favourites 28 Days, Area-7 and The Butterfly Effect.
A slot at the Big Pineapple Music Festival saw the band playing to a new audience alongside the likes of John Butler Trio and Violent Soho. Local media outlet The Point Sunshine Coast, said “I wasn’t prepared for the punk rock assault of The Black Catapult. Damn these guys are good! They bring back musical memories of the 90s SoCal skate punk sound, and, despite the unusually warm weather (which has the lads in black in pools of sweat), they rock out hard”.
The bands’ debut album, All Grown Up, was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews from fans and critics alike. JAM (Just Aussie Music) said, “Brisbane punk band The Black Catapult have a lot to celebrate this week gaining unprecedented attention on Triple J, with their songs placing one, two and three consecutively on both the overall charts and the punk charts.”
Aussie Playlist labelled The Black Catapult “Emerging Aussie Punk who have made a fan out of me, and I think this is largely due to their ability to ensure the rampaging drums don’t drown out the vocals of lead singer David Reynolds. In fact, Reynolds’ vocals also deserve a special mention as they are actually enjoyable to listen to, compared to a lot of rock bands where the music is awesome, but the vocals let them down – a problem The Black Catapult don’t have.”
